Sony Corporation announced today that it has reduced its forecast of PlayStation 3 units sold by March from 11 million to 9.5 million.
Despite this, sales of the company’s handheld system, PlayStation Portable, surpassed expectations, and the firm now expects to sell a total of 13 million units for the current business year.
News comes following the platform holder’s Q3 financial results, where the company saw a six per cent increase, while it’s games division achieved profitability thanks largely to the reduction in manufacturing costs for the PS3.
Operating profits reached JPY 189.36 billion compared to the previous years JPY 178.91 billion. Finally, operating profit forecasts for the year to March were cut from JPY 450 billion to JPY 410 billion.

I thought they would reforcast their sales figures. My guess is that VGChartz isn't that far off with their "estimation" but Sony wants to make absolutely sure they will hit this new forcast and I bet that they are already very very close to 9.5 million sold, if not a little over.
In my opinion, Sony could do a few things that would greatly help sales in the U.S.A. and perhaps the world.
1. Get the cost down another $100. This seems obvious, but I wasn't the one that made the decision to include a Blue-Ray player. Sony did. I would have chosen to increase the core RAM of the system by another 256MB and gone DVD with a HD. Obviously they would need to let the current inventory deplete.
2. Come out with a USB connected IR connector, so that people that have one remote for everything can program it for the PS3.
3. Include an HDMI/Component cable in the box.
4. Include a rumble controller as soon as they can.
Obviously get the software out as quick as they can, gain more exclusives and software, but that can always be said. Sony needs HOME to be good and out quickly.

Why did they drop their estimates by so much. Its a lock that they will hit 10 mil sold by the end of Feb. They should be able to sell close to 10.5 mil by the end of March.

I'm sure the cut is just incase they can't reach reach. It seems they rather place it safe. Which isn't a bad move. If they do sell 11 mill, they can say "Hey, awesome, we did it" and if they sell lowering, they can say "well we forcasted that and adjusted"...

its all good to tell the people who already have ps3's that we're gettin home and other cool things like that BUT SONY NEEDS TO TELL THOSE WITHOUT THE CONSOLE! i rarely see a ps3 advert and all they seem to do is say pretty much 'this is a big black box to play games on. it also has blu ray!' a lot of people have never heard of blu-ray.

@Anim3Fr33K
Why? Instead of hearing that PS3's are selling moderatley well, I'd rather have good games. The only reason my PS3 isn't gathering dust in a cupboard right now is because I'm replaying FF7 on it. Don't get me wrong I love the console but come on, gimme games! -

that's good that they are making money from the psp. but they need to figure out how to advertise the right message to the right demographic. i dont think they really care about advertising campaigns at the moment. or maybe they just like to keep secrets. and i think that sales will improve very much when people get there tax returns, you just watch.
