Sony says Blu-ray investment is justified

Sony Computer Entertainment America has responded to recent news that Project Gotham Racing 4 developer Bizarre Creations conceded having problems fitting data on to a single DVD format, insisting that the firm’s decision to invest in the high-definition Blu-ray format is fully justified.
Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz this week, SCEA spokesperson David Karraker stated, "We took a lot of heat at launch for including Blu-ray in PS3. Now it looks like that investment is being justified.”
"Next generation games simply need more space on the disc to contain all that high definition content. Take a look at Lair, for example, already pushing 25GB of content, and that is a first-generation title. At 50GB storage capacity, Blu-ray gives the PS3 plenty of headroom for developers to fully realize their visions well into the future”, he added.
The response came following comments posted on PGR 4 developer Bizarre Creation’s official forum, stating they were unable to include different times of day in each of the Xbox 360 racer's tracks due to limitations attributed to fitting the data on a single DVD. Subsequently, the team decided to work around the issue by utilizing different lighting sources for each course.

I bet data is still compressed and it's nothing devs can do about it, right now devs make games for 360 to make a profit, Later on, devs will make games for PS3 because it gives them that much more.......

What will happen if sony wins the bluray fight? I mean in the next gen of gameing. If bluray becomes the new dvd, what will the next gen of 360 use for there games? if they are gonna use bluray then they would have to pay sony money for each sold game.. Wierd

Everyday the news just continues to slap Microsoft in the face, console death issues, japan support failing rapidly, and now lack of space for games on their media. I have said this many times and will say it again, the 360 is NOT A NEXT GEN CONSOLE. How much more proof does everyone need? PS3, it's in the box!

Blu-Ray bashers are taking it in the face every week it seems. They bashed Sony for including Blu-Ray in the PS3 and now look what's happening: Blu-Ray is the constant high seller of Hi-Def formats and Developers complaining about the lack of space of DVD9.

I wanna see a game that uses ALL 50gb and using compressed high quality sound using sony's S-Force codec so that there is a tonne more room for high quality textures and models. I mean just look at how much stuff that SE could fit into KH2 and FFXII using the S-Force codec, I wonder what FFXIII will be like :D

Good example, Gears Of War. It was bad enough that MS had to spend an extra billion on resources, just to run Gears on that piece of junk. Then to top it off, Epic didn't even have enough disk space to include Berimak in the game, u know, what MS used to promote the game, and they didn't even tell anyone, till after the games release. Now, Epic is porting the version w/Berimak in it to pc only, OUCH! Way to take it in the ass, MS FANS!!! LOL!!!

If Sony had a strong game lineup at launch and consistently thereafter, it wouldn't be so bad. Once more good games start coming out, then I think people will forgive the price and not biatch as much. Hey, look at the 360; even with a 30% failure rate, people still buy it because of the good games. So its possible for Sony to overcome this rough start.

EHHEHEHEHEHHEHEH SUCK im just pissed that the developers selfish marketing stratgies are killing new games. iv noticed latley that my sense of graphical qualitly is starting to blur once apon a time every game that came out looks so much better then the last. but now becuase of limited recourses (so to speak) game development is grinding to a halt IF YOU WONT PEOPLE TO CONTINUE BUYING GAMES EVENTURLY YOU GONNA HAVE TO LET GO N MAKE SOME PROGRESS AND AT THIS POINT BLUERAY = PROGRESS. screw the 360 or lose your support

Absolutely - I mean with Bluray its easier for developers to churn out games by using big textures rather than rendering in real time (that requires too much skill in programming & effort). Plus anyone who was thinking of using multiple disks and "loading" it onto the fast hard drive is crazy. Why use the hard drive - I mean sure the games would run faster and you could apply mods and updates yes but console gamers are not interested in hard core gaming like PC players are. We want simple and keep it all on one disk. No we want FMV and big fat textures coming off the Bluray. Heck fill up the games with heaps of FMV - we love it!
