Sony shoots down PS3 redesign rumors

Sony has poured cold water on rumors suggesting the platform holder intends on announcing a redesigned PlayStation 3 at next month’s E3 convention in Los Angeles.

Word on the web points to two hardware-related revelations at the show, one of which is believed to be that of the hotly rumored PSP 4000 (or, as recent reports would have you believe, the PSP-Go!), the other being a trimmed up PS3 redesign.

However, speaking to CVG on the matter, a Sony UK rep squashed any hopes of seeing a sleeker, sexier PS3 at the show, commenting: “We currently don't have any plans for a redesigned PS3.”

While reports on a revamped PSP have been doing the rounds for some time now, this is the first we’ve heard on PS3 receiving the same treatment. Yet, while the latter appears firmly ruled out, the latest reports on PSP-Go! suggest a formal announcement on the handheld at E3 is inevitable.

Stay tuned.

Any redesign would just be a slim version, which i can't acutally picture in my head. The PS3 looks good the way it is.

Meh, Sony UK reps wouldn't know anything about what the SCEA or SCEJ are doing or going to announce. This is just the typical kind of "we don't want to confirm any rumors" comment.

a redesign would be pointless, they would have to revamp the entire cooling system, which is already one of the most impressive aspects of the PS3.  i say leave it as it is.

It might be the new SLIM PS3. Sony always creates a slim version of their consoles. Ex: PSP slim, PSP 3000, and PS2 slim.

Like I've said many times but no one seems to listen (I guess most people are in denial); the PSP is selling rather well at the momen, why stel its thunder.  The PS3 will not see a slim version; maybe a version that runs cooler and a bit cheaper (thus justifying a price drop) but not a slim version.

I agree with most of the posts.  It doesn't make sense now unless they could do the following:

    • Lower the cost down because of the redesign.
    • Put in a faster (2x or 4x) BluRay drive.
    • Add IR functionality to it for better remote control options

I personally would love a 4X BlueRay drive in the system.  That wouldn't kill any current games, but just make some peoples PS3 load games quicker.  Granted none of this will happen because Sony needs to continue to be profitiable for a while.

I think it will be a color change for the PS3...like they said before to possibly match up with the silver controller that will be available this summer

the Ps3 looks pretty good for me

But when the new 45nm parts will come they will introduce a slimmer and smaller Psthree maybe not this year but hopefully next.

    • 8:27pm BST - May 13th, 2009

hopefully the ps3 will stay the same for a couple more years they should just upgrade and use smaller parts while using the same case maybe that will free up some space for better cooling they should also eventually add a faster disc reader

The PS3 would benefit from a redesign. i mean look at it ... It's shaped like a f***ing bread bin. Looks bigger than my bread bin come to think of it

it's funny they said this, they usually give the "we don't comment on rumors and speculation" statment. So if they're saying this then it's REALLY not gonna happen. Which is completely fine with me i don't care i would rather see new software developments and games and stuff anyway

Of course they are going to say that!!! They want people to buy their system NOW, not after E3! Well, they want both, but with a slimmer console usually comes a price drop. They dont want people to hold off buying one till the newer one comes out......

If i have a ps3 with no fan, it would have been blown or burnt down by now. I think this redesign word should swing toward the exbox crp. who wants to buy it anyway? no gaming brains....ngb...
