Sony is planning to launch its PS3 video on demand service early next year in Japan, with special motor racing videos to promote the forthcoming Gran Turismo 5 Prologue game.

VOD will enable users to download video content to their PS3 hard drive from early 2008, with downloads expecting to initially cost around $1.85 each.

GT5 prologue is due for release on December 13, so the first wave of videos is set to include motor racing videos and documentaries, although Sony plans to add further content at a later date.

It has long been rumoured that Sony would provide VOD services to PS3 owners, although no official release date has ever been announced.

    PSN is truly amazing. It will def be superior to Xbox Live when Playstation Home and more comes out.

    Lets all look at this topic for a second. ------ xbox live has been out for what 5 years, and the PS network one year. LIVE isnt all that better considering its time on the market.  With Home and all these drastic PSN improvemnts frequently coming out. PSN isnt bad at all, and its free. But even though LIVE has been out for 5 years it  isnt all that better and you have to pay each month.

    With HOME and this new VOD, the PSN will absolutley be better than LIVE.

    Agree Lithgow. That $50 people spend for xbl could instead be used towards hi def movies/tvshows/music that will eventually make it to home. When it comes to media content Sony has the upper hand.

    Sony using GT5 Prologue to promote VOD on the PS3? or Sony using VOD on the PS3 to promote GT5 Prologue? Take your pick. I think the latter is the likely case.

    @Flashjoker:

    Indeed, VOD stands for "Video on Demand". The PS3 is going to have Video On Demand.
