Sony's Peter Dille on losing FFXIII exclusivity

Posted on July 23rd, 2008 at 08:21 EDT

Sony Computer Entertainment America’s Peter Dille has played down the significance of losing PlayStation 3 exclusivity of Final Fantasy XIII, suggesting that long time fans will still be drawn to the Sony platform release.

"What you have with Final Fantasy XIII is a lot like what they've paid for with GTA. It's not an exclusive on their platform. It's now a cross-platform game," said Dille, during an interview with MTV’s Multiplayer Blog.

“I think if you look at how GTA behaved in the marketplace and how it drove - or didn't drive - either console, that's what I'm talking about. Consumers responded to GTA on the PS3 just as they did on the 360. And it becomes a bit of a jump ball. But it didn't rise the tide for them."

Dille stated that long time fans are likely to purchase the game on PS3 on the strength of the series lenghty association with the PlayStation brand, adding, "I think if you fast forward to when Final Fantasy XIII comes out I think you're going to have millions of people who grew up playing Final Fantasy on the PlayStation playing it on a PlayStation 3. They spent a lot of money, I'm sure, to get Final Fantasy onto the 360 but at the end of the day it's on our platform as well."

"Let's look at what happens when you have Metal Gear Solid on your platform ... when the NPD numbers come out ... I think you'll see the value of what a real exclusive title does and how it raised the bar for PS3 versus 360," he said.

Elsewhere, Dille stated that he believes the PS3 is the best option for third party companies looking for global return on their investments: "... if you look at the global footprint, PlayStation 3 dominates in Japan where the 360 is really irrelevant. In Europe, the PlayStation 3 is already past the 360. And in the United States you have a dogfight. You've got PlayStation 3 and 360 going at it and we've swung the momentum our way outselling the 360 during the first half of the year.”

“So back to the third-party community, they're looking at what's going on, they're realigning their development resources to exploit PS3 and I think they understand that if they want to have a global return on their investment, PlayStation 3 is the only place they're going to get it."

I think it was a well said statment, he's limiting the effectivness of M$'s FUD campaign by simply stating how well the PS3 is really doing. The only problem is that the announcment it still hurts a lot more than the actual loss of exclusivity becuase it makes the 36* look impressive when all it did was buy another game like it always does.

 He said the same thing about GTA IV, "most people played it all their life on the Playstation console". And it sold more on the 360. I doubt it will happen with this game because its a RPG and the 360 is all about the FPS and hardcore gamers. So it will most likely sell better on the PS3.

I agree. I never really was impressed with Microsoft's "buying exclusives" gameplan anyway. I read recently that Sony was changing its stance on purchasing exclusives. I honestly don't think thats necessary, not yet anyway. I mean take a look at the titles it already has: Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Resistance 1 & 2, Killzone 2, Little Big Planet, MGS 4, and InFamous just to name a few. I own a ps3, but play both systems and I don't really find myself drawn to any of the 360's exclusives (with the exception of Fable 2). I did want a 360 for Eternal Sonata and Bioshock.........but behold.......to the PS3 they come.

Ratio wise it sold better on the PS3. Compare the copies sold to installed base. In america it was 1.8:1 ratio for the 360 to PS3 Versions, which is dismal because the 360 at that time (and still even now) had  far more than twice the installed base off the PS3. Most recent numbers I can bring up is 2.6 mill for the 360(20mill) and 1.97 for the PS3(13.5 mill).

Interesting how he says about MGS on PS3 exclusive. It was a huge success. Think of the position Sony would be in with another big game like that on PS3 only. The fact of the matter is, they let FFXIII slip away from them, which is just silly. It's like saying "Ah well, one wont matter", but why didn't they just front up some money to make sure it stays exclusive. Would put the PS3 in the dominant position in all territories then.

Unless...... the other article about their announcement in the Sqeenix event in Japan turns out to be something rather large....

sony ( the main company ) has alot of money but doesn't really carry about their gaming consoles (playstation) they care about T.V's camera's stereo's, while bill gates really cares about his gaming consoles ( xbox ) and invest more money in it, that's why they buy exclusives

It's not a complete loss because the PS3 still has versus XIII but I applaud Sony's approach. it is idiotic to buy exclusives since most of them will be timied anyway while the main dev company retains the rights.

Turining around and funneling more money in their first and second party titles which will withoubt a doubt stay exclusive makes more sense. Now we know they have some awesome racer's, action and FPS's, wee need to see some more RPG's. Bring back the uber quality of arc the lad. I want to see an arc the lad, legend of dragoon or similar sony franchise (make a new one if you have to) that will put SqaureEnix to shame.

I played the last arc the lads and though they had decent stories and atmosphere but were shy of RPG greatness.

Well they shoukd really take a look at our (now) lost exclusives... Look at GTAIV. it was a great game, but how much content was dropped so it could actually fit on the 360 disk? a lot if you ask me. the game was awesome but it could've been the best game of all time. But instead they made it multiplatform and then gave the 360 exclusive content. Soonce you're done with the story there isn't really much left to do once you complete all the side missions.... Not more jets to fly, No more pimping out cars and Nitro's.... no jetpack (as far as i know)....and no more learning different fighting styles, they could've done sooooo much more if they had the space Blu Ray provides.

I will still get FFXIII just because i am such a big fan and i'm sure they won't F*** it up, but somewhere along the line Sony needs to to stop playing nice and actually bring out the big guns.... If they really put their heads down the PS3 can drown the 360, and even compete against the Wii sales wise...

the thing sony needs to do is attract people into buying the ps3. make people ask "why do i need?" and their answer be "a ps3!" what does sony need to bring to the table? i have no clue. why did the 3pusy sell so much? for LIVE? is that all it takes? Ps3 needs more exclusives, no doubt about that; but they need to bring something more, that something that will make people want to buy it.

and for those that think that m$ is just spewing money out of bill gates as.s into the 360, maybe he's doing that but i highly doubt it. come on, be realistic, i dont think the future of the console is what keeps him up at night thinking of how to make it better than its rivals. he has sucked money from the people that have bought it and he will continue if he can, but if the console tanks, he dont care, please. and it isnt like sony cares more about their other products, they are a big company and they got other things to do you know. they cant focus completely on the ps3 (although we would like them to), the ps3 is part of sony computer entertainment and big bucks go in and out from it; we just gotta hope for the best and that sony goes ftw....and that i dont post these long as.s comments/rants

I honestly think some developers are a bit slow on the up-take.

They couldn't even see through all the negativity and invest to get the most out of the console as soon as possible. Their delay will cost them for that, unless of course they would have preferred their delay to enhance 360 sales which would make their lives cheap & easy.

As for FF13, I totally agree with how he sees things.

Any fan of the FF series will have or will be thinking about getting FF13 for the PS3 unless of course they have already devoted themselves to another platform & dismissed the FF series already.

As for 360 owners...well, this is fantastic news & gives their console a second wind with a fantastic title. Unfortunately at this stage, the 360 is just looking to extend its life-span by a few months and time is running out until a new console is likely to be launched. Weigh that with the release of FF13 & the 360 doesn't hold that much promise for the new customer (IMO). Back catalogues are all well and good, but anyone looking for that online experience has & will miss out on much of the titles due to a late purchase, not to mention a short console life for them personally.

But then, how many new gamers think of their future entertainment? Will they look at the long term & get what has the most in the genres they prefer? Or will they look at what a console has now without taking into account of the gaming left in old releases or the console itself?

It could go either way I suppose, but I think Dille has it about right.

The problem is that the ps3 version is sure to be set back and come out 6months after the 360 version. I doubt ff13 will use the true potential of the ps3 and in the worst case making it just a port from the xbox. I knoxw many people which love ff but havn't got a ps3 or 360 yet and I don't think they would prefer buying an xbox instead of waiting longer and havind to spend more on the console for the same game!

Correct me if i'm wrong.

@Denali2

All Final Fantasy games are seperate. For example, Final Fantasy VII has NOTHING to do with Final Fantasy VIII other than it was made (by and large) by the same people. FF VERSUS is a game, set in the same world as FFXIII, but other than that bearing no relation to FFXIII or any of the other FF games.

and to comment on the article, i think he is for the most part right, but i think if there were people waiting for FFXIII to buy their PS3, they might now just buy a 360 cause it's cheaper. While Sony are winning in Europe, Japan and Australia, North America is the big market so they should try and appeal more to that area of the world. I think more exclusives is definetly in order, they were stupid to let DMC4 go and they were even stupider to let GTAIV go. I think what Sony needs to do now is start appealing to the hardcore audience, and if they turn out well Resistance 2 and KZ2 might be able to do that, but moreover MAG might be able to do that. Only time will tell.

Ports have their good points and bad points.  The bad thing is that yeah, anything created for the 360 will never be as good as one made for the PS3 because of the limitations.  Take any 360 game and you can port it to a PS3 easily.  Halo3 , Gears of War 2, and Fable 2 could be played on a PS3 if Microsoft didn't hold onto them like a pit bull.  Of course going to a PS3 to a 360 is hard to do.  It's like taking stuff out of a filled up big box and trying to put in into a little box.  If MGS4 went to 360, they'd have to take parts out, or put it on separate disks.  Of course the good thing about ports is that the game companies can sell more games, which they can use to make more games and better games.  Sure, exclusives can help sell consoles and the companies that make them make pretty good money, but they are limiting their sells by doing so.  Personally, I think Sony should allow more free, user creative content.  Look at all the excitement over LittleBigPlanet.  People want to create their own video games, make their own maps, customize their own characters, make mods, etc.  Give users the tools to make their own little games for the PS3.  Sony would get a lot more exclusive games without spending anything.   Sure, some of these games might not be good, but some might be great.  You'd get the gamers who want as many games to play as possible and you'd get the creative people who want to see their game idea realized, but want it on the best system out there.

You got a few things wrong there. FFX-2 was a direct sequel to FFX. The dirge of cerebus, and crisis core bear the same name as FFVII and are directly related.

Other than those few oddballs most FF have nothing to do with each other.

Thats cool and all what he said but if we (ps3 owners) keep getting crappy games and ports from the xbox what good is the ps3. No power is being use. Only one time, MGS4. Everything else is the same as xbox. I hear what your saying but you have to back it up with something about how the ps3 will get push from here on out.

I really think Sony is dropping the ball again, expecting everyone to stay loyal to the playstation brand.  They really should be fighting harder to secure not only exclusives but persuade M$ backed companies like Bungie for example to switch sides(Bungie isn't very happy with M$).  The ONLY reason Microsoft got into the console business is because Sony set their sites on replacing the family PC and bringing it to the living room via Playstion console.  Bill Gates doesn't care if he makes money on the console war just so long as he can maintain his monopoly in the PC market.  Therefore M$ is willing to pay anything to crush it's competition.  M$ reportedly lost $4 billion it's first 4 years in the console market, do you think they really care if it costs $50 million to steal an exclusive away from the PS3.  I hate Bill Gates and his crappy Windows and that is why I'll never buy into the Xbox console.

Sony's [and our] loss of PS3 exclusives is always a surprise at first; but in the end, it's not a big deal. The 360 has proven itself a "worthy opponent" for the PS3. We might as well share the grandiose game called FFXIII with those 360 fans. Now, if Versus becomes a non-exclusive, I'll be pissed. Perhaps FFXIII will catch my full attention soon enough, but it's all about FFXIII:Versus and its real-time "KH" battle system for now.

I have to dis-agree with you. You have to stop looking at the 360 ports (Orange Box was terrible) and look at the original titles. There's more than enough there to keep you entertained. As far as power, yea MGS4 did do some amazing things, but so did Heavenly Sword and Uncharted: Drakes Fortune (my personal favorite on the system). And, though I know this is the exception rather than the rule, Call of Duty 4 was better on the PS3. Even the developers admited to taking a route better equiped to taking advantage of the PS3s power. More developers have to do this and stop being lazy.

You say that but at what good is a system if its the same. What is the reason you bought your ps3, if games cont. to loo the same everytime they come out what good is the ps3 beside a bluray player. Think about it if it look the same or ported then why not both systems cost the same. You tell me to go out and buy your sytem because you have all this power and stuff but your games are the same as the next sytem. So what cane you tell me, I've have every system that came out sence th 80's. So I paid my money for more not the same.

I95South, they are still different platforms.   Personally, I have played a few exclusives on the 360 and to tell you the truth, I only liked 2 of them.  The rest I didn't like, while the PS3 also has exclusives, I have played more of them and find them to be better, there are a few that I didn't like on the PS3 but the rest that I enjoyed outnumbered what I enjoyed on the 360.

Personally I don't feel the need to convince anyone to buy this system for a few reasons.

1.) I am not that shallow

2.)my friends both have the same taste in video games and systems as I do

3.)I personally find Sony to have products of better quality then Microsoft does.  Call me a fanboy all you want but I have had trouble, crap, just straight low quality stuff from Microsoft and Sony regardless of the product...Consoles, HDTV's, stereo's, etc etc just better quality stuff.

What this guy is saying makes Perfect since, well it does to me anyway.  I personally don't care if Final Fantasy went to the 360... one reason

1.) I don't like the 360 controller for RPG's

I most likely wont purchase a Final Fantasy game this year.  I went through so much crap on Final Fantasy 12 for the PS2 that the novelty of the game has finally wore out.  I want to play other RPG's then Final Fantasy.  L.O I played for the 360 and I liked it regardless of the controller because it was strictly for the 360 (exclusive).

The Ps3 still has KILLER titles coming out that are still exclusive and new ones are coming up out of the woodwork.  plus MOST ( not all) of the ports that came from the 360 were crap anyway, they really were.  I do like some of them games on the 360 but really, most were crappy and I wouldn't give them the time of day.

@MRMILLER

I definitely have to agree with you about how Final Fantasy 12 was a ruined experience. I went into that game expecting quite a bit and got nothing in return. I also have to agree with you in terms of quality between Sony and Microsoft (Red-Ring anyone??).

@195SOUTH

Here are a few reasons. (BTW I don't see this as being shallow. I don't have to justify my purchase or convince someone else to by, I just enjoy talking about the system war.)

1)Sony's current exclusives are WAY better than the 360's exclusives. (Halo 3 was terrible and I used to be a fan of the series until then).

2)Sony's online service is gradually (if not already) becoming a much better deal than Live. Simply because there aren't enough differences between them to warrant Microsoft charging for its service.

3)Alot of people act like the whole Blu-ray player thing is an unnecessary comodity they would sacrifice for a lower price.......man get real. This drive alone could be 360's downfall. Who enjoyed changing disks for Blue Dragon and Lost Oddesey? I find it extremely impressive that games like MGS4 fit on one disk (barely mind you), so do you think developers will be excited to create games of that calibur for the 360.....on multiple disks? I know one thing, the fact that FFXIII is coming out on 360 means ps3 owners will have to wait a while longer for its release. Why? Some things will have to be scrapped or compressed for the 360 more so than for the ps3 (GTAIV.....).

These are just a few of the reasons why PS3 rules.

@Jinjokage

You two are still not getting the point. I know Sony is great with its brand. I have the Consoles, HDTV's, stereo's all from sony. Two 50in tvs at that. So SONY gets my money. I know sony has more exclusives then xbox. But for how long, if they keep losing them. And thats not even the reason that I wrote the first time. You two dind't read the point were I was getting at. What I meant about what I said was if every time a dev get on here and say "the ps3 game is looking closet to the xbox and it will be the same when the game release". That were i'm getting at. If you look at a game when the ps2 and xbox was side by side the game would look better and play better on the xbox( NOTE: I never had a xbox, only playstation) but now, with the tables turned its the same. 50gigs vs. 10gigs.  If devs make both games the same and even if they max out the xbox 10 gigs ( witch they don't) you will be left with 40 gigs that could have been use to add more or even make the game look better, I don't know sky's the limit. I know that the ps3 is a better system, I don't need you two to tell me that. Im not a little kid. Trust me , I could break down the ps3 and put it back together. You both repeated what I've already said or was talking about.

1) Sony is a better system.

2) we get ports and they all are crappy)

3)I know all about the blu ray I have 23 movies

4)I know about the online, Ive been playing it since the release on ps2( love it, and its free.)

I know ps3 is the best, thats why I have one. All my friends have a 360, I'm the only one that don't have one and never will. What I said was "why the power is not being push if we have all of it with the games we get vs. the ones the xbox gets. I have my ps3 being push in other ways by being hook up to my pc and tv making and cutting home movies. So I know the power. And everyone don't play the same games ether, so even if you name a few games that might not be there type. As exclusives, MGS4 is the only one that push the system, thats were I was getting at. Blue Dragon and Lost Oddesey didn't and all of the others din't two. See what happen to DMC4 and GTA4 after it went to xbox. They are just another game know vs. when they were only ps games. Tell me you don't see it.
