Sony's PlayStation 3 up 40% in sales from last year

It's becoming increasingly evident why Sony stands strong with the belief that their latest console venture has no need for a price cut. While analysts and would-be console owners alike continually demand for Sony to lower the price of PlayStation 3, recent sales data has revealed that such a move may not be necessary in order for the company to move consoles.

With the Wall Street Journal and other media outlets reporting doom and gloom for the black behemoth, sales data has indicated that PS3 sales are actually up 40 percent in comparison to 2008. That's quite the feat considering the system is often considers a little too pricey for the average consumer.

“We’ve had a solid holiday season and have delivered consistent growth throughout this year. [2008] was a pivotal year for PlayStation with the best software line up in the industry, a dramatic expansion of PlayStation Network including the launches of the video delivery service and the beta of the PlayStation Home,” said Ian Jackson, Vice President of Sales for Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA).

Furthermore, Jackson attributed the fact Sony had sold far less consoles in November 2008 compared to the same period in 2007 to ”an abnormally strong month due to a price cut (with) the introduction of the 40GB PS3.”

Its true, and it was only a matter of time, even some of my xbox loving friends have converted to the PS3 Yay! People are beging to realise that it is so much more than just a games console and that it really does represent value for money....big up the PS3

It's a good thing for sure. But considering the number of quality games that came out, I was hoping more PS3s would have been sold.

Okay, maybe it sold more compared to last year, but don't you think that a price cut is needed to compete with the 360 and Wii? You know, PS3 didn't do so well, Sony even lost Europe, where the brand is strong. Something is wrong, all the PS3 need is a price cut.

@4 there's nothing wrong with the price for now but the credit crunch will hit all areas hard.  The important thing here is that sales are up by 60% from last year.  The impressive thiing to realise is that a ps3 is more than twice the price of a x360 and still ps3 is performing well.

chances are that most people who want a 360 have one because they are so cheap.  This doesn't leave much of a market for microsoft and ps3 sales will be steady throughout 2009 whereas x360 sales are soon to plummet.

I would expect a ps3 price cut later this year, as the production costs have fallen significantly are those savings will be passed on to the customer.

Sony continues to kid itself.  60% increase in sales is laughable.  They need 600% increase in sales.

I would think the $249 price for a PS3 (that expired Dec. 31) just for applying for the Playstation credit card made a huge difference. Sony bought the announcement to appear at the top of Google search results for 'PS3', which I think was brilliant, considering.

@5 the ps3 is double the price of an arcade 360 but remember there are other types of xbox that are a lot dearer than the basic model. however, it would be interesting to see the broken down (pun intended!) sales figures across the xbox range. would they still be selling so strong if the arcade version was taken away??

because true gamers are missing a lot if they don't own a PS3 just look at the lineup of games they'll be missing, no true gamer can resist that lineup

@6, oh, yeah, I like your logic and your reasoning.  They should make you head of Sony. lol

@4,did you ever stop and think that Sony is not trying to compete with the wii and 360? Did it ever occur to you that they are more concerned with customer satisfaction and bringing original quality games to their current fanbase instead of just trying to sell consoles? Seriously, why does it matter to you or anyone else if the PS3 out sells the other consoles? Just play the games and shut up.

    2008
    Claimed totals
    360:  10.3 million
    PS3: 12.39 million (A 40% callender year increase)

Just lettin you know. And that number is after a price drop brought in a whopping 5.5 million units for the 360 in the last quarter.

    Hmmmm.

@11 I think you've got the right idea in some respect.  There is a very real case for the view that each console appeals to different markets. The big difference is that Sony will appeal to all markets throughout the lifetime of their console, so they will see the highest ROI.  Not only is the console lifespan for ten years but also the project plan.  This is a long game, and Sony are geared up exactly for that.  Microsoft are playing draughts, Sony are playing 3d-chess.  The only way out for M$ is to try to release a 720 but they are already running at a huge loss so bold moves are out of the question.  This is going to be a very interesting year.  The hare is too busy slagging off the tortoise to see what's about to hit them.

@11 ROFL!! Yes bud we can all dream. But when it comes down to it it's all a bussiness, don't be so naive, all they care about is money. If they truly cared about their fans they would have endorsed square enix more so that they wouldnt go on and be bought out by M$ and end up making exclusives for it ><
