Strong high-end PS3 sales to ease price pressure?

Sony Computer Entertainment America has indicated that there may be less pressure on the company to lower the price of its PlayStation 3 console in the near future, as a result of strong sales of the 80GB unit in the US.

Speaking to Reuters, SCEA’s Vice President of Product Marketing, Scott Steinberg, commented: “We're seeing that the hard-core gamer is not afraid to throw another $100 at the PS3 because the value proposition is so rich.”

"We're still in the phase of studying what this means for the potential roadmap for the year,” Steinberg continued.

When prompted to comment on whether this meant that any pricing pressure might not materialise, he replied, "It's leading us to think so.”

“The year of the PS3 started in fall 2007, I think it will be an extended year. We are feeling positive momentum."

If 80gb ps3s are selling well, then why did sony take them away from us?  If they dont get the rumored 120gb console out soon I would expect a pretty good drop in sales...

I also paid $600 for a 60GB on day one, but this guy is an idiot if he truely believes that the PS3 is ok at the price it is now.  Yes, I will concede that hard core gamers will pay a lot of cash for a game console, but is that the market Sony is really after?  Honestly, just look at how much better the 40GB at $400 did this year.  I personally know of people that would LOVE to jump on the PS3 bandwagon but want one at $300.  At that price point, the audience for the PS3 is far greater and it could possibly make it compete against the Wii this year.

Now, having said all that, I can understand this guy saying what he said.  "IF" he would have come out and said, "Yep, it looks like we need another price cut", then it would really hurt current sales.  Sony needs to flush out the current inventory of boxes and then get the smaller chipsets out there and then look at lowering the price again.  I sincerly hope that if Microsoft lowers their price by $50, that Sony matches it day one.

Hopefully Sony comes out with a new sku like a 120GB soon or their sales will probably not be as high as they could be. If I only had an option of the 40GB and didn't have a PS3 yet, I would be waiting until a new higher featured model came out. I'm guessing there are a lot of people out there that don't have PS3's yet that have the same view as me. Sony surely has to realize that a lot of people will gladly pay extra for extra features. Hence why the 60GB sold so much better than the 20GB.

This announcement comes a week after HD-DVD dies?  This to me is more proof that PS3 was, from the beginning, primarily a delivery method for Blu-ray.

People throw $100 extra for backward compatibility you ****.  And now that you're phasing the 80GB out, people are yet again getting boned.  Dumb***.

i dont know anyone who wants to buy the 80g ps3..... how is it a great success?

if they lowered it to 200, then idont think anything could stop the ps3.

The problem with the price 400, is that its about the same prices as a cheap PC, and a pc can do much more then a ps3, and can be upgraded if you want.

I paid $599 for my 60GB PS3. With the hardware PS1/PS2 Backwards Compatibility, the Blu-Ray player, the flash drive slots, and 4 USB ports in the front, I still think it's worth every penny.

@Motoken Obviously you know only a select group of people. Those people also probably have a limited amount of money to spend on a PS3 and/or don't care about the extra features the 80GB has. Sorry, but not everyone is like your friends. As the article states the 80GB is popular. Thats how it can be a great success. The rest of what you said is just ridiculous. Of course if it was lowered to $200 nothing would stop it. Guess what if a porsche cost as much as a Honda Civic nothing would stop it either. Wow your either naive or just stupid. Just like a porsche is worth way more than a civic a PS3 is worth way more than $200. Also a PC that costs $400 dollars is a piece of trash PC. You know what else? To upgrade a PC your going to have to spend more money and to get it anywhere near the level of the PS3's performance, your going to have to spend a lot more than $400.

Well my 80giger cost me $600, and I think it worth every penny (even more than that to be honest). I think people are still stuck on the days when a video game console was only able to play games. With all the features and ways you can use a PS3, $600 is highway robbery...we should be wondering why they are selling it so cheap. Like it has been mentioned before...you have cellphones on the market that are more expensive than a PS3, and doesn't offer half as must of the experience the PS3 does. Once Sony gets the marketing part of what all the PS3 can do....price issues will be a thing of the past.

I bought an 80g and I am thrilled that I payed the extra $100.  This system is the sh!t.  If they lower the price that would probably help sells I'm sure.  But even if they don't, I still think the saying "You get what you pay for." rings true.

I never could figure out what everyone's problem with the price was. I also paid $599 for a 60 GB. I don't regret it for one second. It's just too bad they took out the BC for the 80GB. In all honesty though, the only game I've played for the PS2 in my PS3 was FFXII. That's just because I was in the middle of it when I bought the system. Now I can't bring myself to play many PS2 games. The price for what you get is a sweet deal and it's too bad many people (still?) can't see that. Hopefully now that BluRay won, they will see the value in the PS3 more. Yes, you get what you pay for.

I paid $685 dollars for my 60GB PS3 and I don't regret it one bit. Until buying my PS3, I had never spent that much money on just one single item before in my life. When I first read in the Playstation magazine (formerly OPM) and I found out that the 60GB PS3's price, I was kind of blown away, but at the same time, I didn't care because my mind was set on getting a PS3 regardless of a price.

I'm kind of suprised to hear that the 80GB PS3's sales have been so good that Sony has had less pressure for a price drop. Also, with the anticipation of upcoming PS3 exclusives, it's about time people have just started paying the price for the 80GB PS3. But I do know one thing for sure, as soon as Microsoft drops the 360's price, the PS3's price will drop also. I'm thinking that the PS3's price will always be a little bit more expensive than the 360, but that's not a problem because PS3's are still selling well. Even in Europe, the PS3 costs more than the 360 and the PS3 is outselling the 360 in sales, and that says a LOT.

i dont know y ppl complain about the price of the ps3, when it first came out sony was loosen $200 per console sold because of all the hardware in it and that is when the 60gig was $600. so back when it was $600 u were getting a great deal and u still are they dont need any more price drops. (proud owner of a 60 gig ps3)
