Jack Tretton, CEO and President of Sony Computer Entertainment America, has said that the company’s PlayStation 3 console is on track for a “breakthrough year” following news that PS3 software sales topped the two million mark last month.
Tretton’s comments come following the NPD Group’s figures for April 2008, which showcased a year-on-year increase in PS3 software sales by staggering 410 per cent.
“Clearly, the tremendous legacy of Grand Theft Auto on PlayStation, combined with the blockbuster launch of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue packed a one-two punch with consumers at retail this month,” he said.
“The proof is in the numbers and, in April, PlayStation 3 hardware sales experienced a 127 percent increase over April of last year.”
PS3 sold 187,100 units of hardware, only slightly edged out by the Xbox 360, which shifted 188,000 units during the same period. Nintendo’s Wii remained top of the pack with a lead of 714,200 consoles sold.
Despite this, Tretton expressed his confidence that the“PS3 remains on pace for a breakthrough year,” with its success “fueled by enthusiasm for Blu-ray as the definitive high def standard and the growing number of consumers gearing up for some of the most anticipated titles of the year, exclusively for PS3.”

the fact they edged out the 360 so fast fast means by the end of the year the Wii is what's gonna give the PS3 any problem. The 360 will fade into the background like Xbox orignally did, it's sales are already pointing towards that

Wait, there was a shortage of 360's. That spread of 900 consoles is a fluke.
And the Wii is just crazy.

I can only assume that US buyers feel that they're fulfiling some kind of patriotic duty by 'buying American'. Can't think of any other reason to keep buying 360's! ;-p
C'mon America, the rest of the world is 2 steps ahead of you!

ironflag55555 is right. don't think about wii's selling or 360's selling, JUST FOCUS TO RELEASE A GOOD EXCLUSIVE GAME, such as MGS4 -

Because titles, like motorstorm, ratchet and clank, uncharted and the multitudes of other titles that came out for the PS3 is not good enough. Sony is a large company, they have several divisions working on games at the same time the have divisions worring about the firmware, apps, home, dev kits, sales, online play, publishing rights. In addition to that they manufacture tv's radios, cpu's, handheld music players, camera's. The also have a movie studio, cell phone design a lending.......
You know what, I don't have the patience to continue listing what they do. I just wish people would quit making idiotic comments about what a large business should and shouldn't be doing.
