Lord Of The Rings Online developer Turbine has revealed plans for a PlayStation 3 MMO, adding to a rapidly-expanding list that includes The Agency, DC Universe Online and the recently-announced Bioware epic Dragon Age.

"We’re looking at creating, hopefully, the first MMO that really works," stated Communications Director Adam Mersky. "We’re not going to rush to be first so-to-speak, but clearly we’re leading the way."

The company also cited a quality-driven development cycle, boding well for the future of this mysterious project.

"We’ll ship something when it’s ready, and when it’s something that’s going to work on the platform," Mersky continued. "Clearly there are a lot of hurdles. We’ve been working for awhile, plowing through the majority of them, and we’ve got a lot of work still to do."

Mersky declined to provide any thematic insight, but marrying the Lord of the Rings property with a next-gen console audience would seem like a no-brainer - hopefully we'll have confirmation soon.

    A LOTR MMO game could either end up being very cool, fighting all the different types of creatures with other people helping you or they could mess it up pretty bad. I'm a LOTR's fan but I generally don't buy the games because there ends up being something better on the table.

    The best of that list is easily the Bioware one (though I've always had my eye on The Agency).  Trouble is, this is the only site that suggests Dragon Age is coming to the PS3.  No one else is saying that.  There are a lot of nervous fanboys that are saying that if this is a PS3 exclusive, they are selling their Xbox 360's and getting a PS3.  This would be the western RPG coup that could diffuse the loss of FF13.

    the best IMO has to be DC Universe Online.  This game will change the gaming industry.

    I had a crack at LOTRO on PC, and IMHO, it takes the best bits of WoW and improves it a lot - it's easily the best MMO I've played - if they can do a similar job on PS3, it would be a very, very good thing!

    I want Warhammer 40,000 MMO, there are too many fantasy (although Warhammer Fantasy would be welcome) or present-day reality MMOs in my opinion

    Anyone play LOTRO? it was the biggest piece of trash I have ever wasted my own money on. I even got the special edition on launch day :( .I bought it to get away from WoW, but after not even 3 days of play I went back to WoW and never played LOTRO ever again. It didn't even use it's own game engine it was the one used on D&D online (which sucked too). I have a feeling anything else they release will be a lackluster, failed attempt to steal WoW's thunder but as every attempt from every other publisher has, it will fail miserably.

    @13

    I dont know what you are talking about, LOTRO is one of the very best MMORPG games there is, hands down.  Oh, I see, you are a WoW fanboy, that explains a lot.
