Uncharted 2 to "max out" the PS3's SPUs

Last month we posted information from the January edition of Game Informer, which listed new details on Naughty Dog's upcoming PlayStation 3 sequel, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. One of the topics discussed regarded the developers pushing the PS3 to its limits in terms of power usage; however, the team neglected to go into details on the subject.
More recently however, speaking in an interview with Edge, Naughty Dog co-presidents Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra broached the subject once more, providing further details on how the company is attempting to unlock the power of Sony’s black box.
"Uncharted used 30 per cent of the PS3’s SPUs, and this time we’re maxing it out,” says Balestra. “That means we can blend and switch animations a lot quicker, and we have more facial joints in-game for characters to react with believable expressions.”
“So if he’s sneaking, his animation has to reflect that, and if he’s on shaky ground, you’ll see him checking his balance. If he’s scared, you’ll see the anguish and fear on his face,” adds Wells.
From the sounds of it, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will showcases some impressive realism in character movement and animation. It will be exciting to see what Naughty Dog reveals over the course of the next few months. Stay tuned for more information.

@ 1. I played Uncharted to see what everyone was raving about and I was not dissapionted. The first Instalment was excelent and loads of fun. First day buy for me. Just wonder if they will include any multiplayer/online this time around.

Is it going to max them out with 'optimised and efficiant code and not just fill them with half optimised unefficiant code?

I do not doubt that they are maxing out the power of the PS3 already, the PS3 is powerful, but Naughty Dog know how to make a damn fine game. However maxing out the PS3s power is not the limit, next comes using that power to push games even further.

This game looks great, but there is no way they are going to "max out" the SPU power. Maybe if the game was on the Xbox but not on PS3. I thought the 1st game was great. The aiming was fine with me. If Killzone2 has not maxed it out Uncharted 2 will absolutely not!

Hopefully they'll be able to add a possible co-op multiplayer and offline? That would be amazing if they did. -

I expect the highest power usage to go to about 85% and thats the highest its gonna probably get to imo.
Although about 85% is gonna still be AWESOME i mean the first looked spectacular at only 30% can u imagine it at even 85%????
It will be the best looking game this year i bet and even if it isnt i dont care cos i LOOOOOOOOVE the first its my favourite game ever and this will probably no no definately replace it

You just know this game isnt going to be awesome.
However, hype kills games, and Uncharted had more or less no hype. So we shall wait and see.

I really enjoyed Uncharted i only hated that had some problems getting the trophies, i was able to get the medals but some trophies didnt appear even if i had obtained the medals. Other than that i am getting this game. This year is starting to look even better than 2008, lots of great games coming out and starting early this year with SFIV, killzone2 and Residentevil5 XD

There are a couple of things I would love to see happen in this game. My biggest complaints about the first one (and don't get me wrong, I love that game) were the repetitive gun fights and the actual firefight mechanics. I'd love to see some work on those, as well as making enemies easier to kill.
I would also love to see destructive environments. You just don't feel like you're sitting behind a machine gun when you can't shoot a candle off a table or crumble a wall.
The grenade animation could use some love.
I am looking forward to this game though, especially if it has the cinematic quality of the first one.

SPIN ALERT!!! If this game really does "max out" the SPU's then the game is horribly unoptimised and inefficient. Just because something is a system hog doesn't mean its better! I could write a program that could "max out" my PC which has hardware more powerful than the PS3, but that doesn't make it a good program, just poorly optimised!

@2 i did the samething and i gotta say that game looks very good and play well.... @11 you must need some GLASSES bad or you must still be playing on a SDTV cause that game looks better than half the games that came out in SEPT. - DEC.. but on topic i dout it and they should keep stuff like this under lock and key and now Sony need to there gaming teams to shut up and do there work. since the VGA thats just about the only two games you here about we shouldn't hear nuttin about this game till E3.

Keep in mind that maxing out a systems resources does not necessarily mean showing you the full graphics potential that a system can achieve. If anything it's more of a midway or quarter way milestone. There are still undiscovered methods for using those resources differently and/or more efficiently.
