Uncharted demo now works in all regions

Posted on November 10th, 2007 at 15:58 EDT

We originally reported that the Uncharted: Drake's Fortune demo which released last Thursday in North American territories was region locked, and therefore wouldn't work on anything but actual North American PS3s. Later, it was revealed the demo would be hitting European shores on November 22nd - about two weeks prior to the title's release in European territories. Now we have even better news for you.

The Uncharted demo that you've all been itching to get yours hands on is now working on all PS3 consoles, regardless of territory. Christophe Balestra, Co-President Naughty Dog, reported on the PlayStation.Blog:

"We absolutely did not plan the demo to be region locked. As soon as we figured out the problem existed, Sam Thompson called me and I jumped into my car, drove to the office and fixed it right away. It’s an honest mistake and we didn’t try to prevent anybody from enjoying the Uncharted demo. I feel even more sorry because most of the people who experienced the problem are in Europe and I’m European myself."

We already had an incredible amount of respect for the guys over at Naughty Dog, but after this, we have even more. In addition, this is some crazy sort of verification that while it's not "technically" allowed to have PSN accounts outside of your region, it really isn't all that bad after all. Stay tuned for our Uncharted: Drake's Fortune review soon.

Clearly even they recognize that as long as you have a legally elligeable system whether you're an American living in Europe or even commute between regions, there are circ*mstances were people over seas have a viable right to beable to download a demo from another region provided they aren't doing it for fruadulant reasons.

And yeah I had to Edit the word "circ*mstances" because the word filter still sucks.

I hope the game itself is better than the demo. I didn't hate it, but In my opinion The acting could be better. The graphics are amazing! I don't think I've seen water look so good in a vdeo game before. The combat was a bit sloppy, but I just hope the final game is great. This is probably the most anticipated games for me next to Haze and Assassins Creed.

Naughty Dogs has a dedicated team ready to ensure fans are satisfied with their games.This is noble for a development team.

psn id: gingo... Redownloaded the demo yesterday, when everyone else in the world knew they'd fixed it. If PSU were any more on the ball, they'd be circus seals.

Glad they fixed this, i'll go download it again later...In hindsight, the fact that they fixed the "region encoding" that had been slapped on shows a great deal of respect to gamers.  Lets face it, there are thousands of legislations and laws and procedures that Sony have to go through before even a simple demo can be uploaded to the various servers around the world, I can forgive a week or two delay as long as the demo comes out before the game, retrospective demo's are pointless...people will either have bought the game or rented it (or is that just me?)

@ benstevens:

Technically your not allowed to, but that doesnt stop people. Even Official PlayStation Magazine Australia suggests it lol What you do is create a new account on your PS3, sign in - and sign up for a new PSN account. Simply select "United States" when it comes to country, and enter a false address (I used Rockstar Games NYC address lol) and thats it. Follow through and then sign into the store.

This is Great News! I'm downloading it again now......although, I have to say, it really pi**es me off why all of these game demos cant be released in all regions at the same time!!!! Us European users are in a way being forced to have all these USA, Japanese, Hong Kong accounts just so we can get hold of these demos now without having to wait weeks before it turns up in the European Store! In a way it makes the European Store completely useless in many respects.

@Ameo

It probably comes down to Sony what comes out on the Euro PSN. Or its down to localization again?

But everyone complains that these demos come on the Euro store at a later date. Instead of complaining and waiting for the EU store update, why don't you create a US account and download it. Its easy to do and only takes a couple of minutes to set up. The only demo I have left to get from the US store is Uncharted, but every other US game has worked on my PS3 (I didn't get Def Jam demo) So don't worry about downloading future Demos from different regions as a demo not working isn't common and a mistake like Naughty dog say and then they fixed it.

Respect to Naughty Dog.
