Universal May Go Blu-ray

On IGN's Play Beyond podcast, the interesting issue is discussed over the format wars. Apparently, according to IGN's Play Beyond Podcast, Blu-ray is looking more enticing to Universal, a long time supporter of HD-DVD.

The consideration of such a decision seems rightly based given Blu-ray's sale momentum both with consumers and with retail. Blu-ray sales continue to outpace HD-DVD sales by nearly a 2:1 margin, and major retailers have expressed a strong preference for Blu-ray--a move that is really getting Universal to think strategically.

They also discuss other PlayStation topics such as how Paramount's surprising and odd decision, was a big mistake. This podcast is definitely interesting, and worth checking out.

Yeah, I say BAN PARAMOUNT.!!! Dont buy anything associated with Paramount, including Speilbergs stuff. FU Paramount. Keep all of your movies regardless what format. DVD sales will drop as well.

yea definetly avoid paramount, the switched camps because of a $150 million payment to them by the HD-DVD consortium only further hurting the consumer. This is a prime example of the state of corporate america.

Universal will not go Bluray. To make things worst: Paramount and Dreamworks have both just announced they are leaving Bluray. If you think thats it - think again. Fox wants download HD services - IE: it will not favor Bluray long term either as the HD download service undercuts their own Bluray retail price by a fair margin.

I'll punt $5000 that sales of movies on DVD outsell Bluray in three years time. What I'm saying is Bluray is a peanut - its sales volume isnt worth a bean. Most people have and will continue to use DVD.

At the high end anyone remotely tech savvy are building media centers with 5 x 750GB or 5 x 1TB drives in them running RAID 5.

I like Playstation for games and I wish to they would stop wasting time pushing Bluray hype and instead focus on making games and attracting developers & publishers to the PS3 platform. Im not going to remain a PS3 user for stupid movies - I got about 800 already thanks.

You PS3/Blu Ray fanboys are funny.  That is why you should stay out of the home video/cinema biz.   Blu Ray is expensive as **** and the hardware isnt even finalized, ie..Profile 1.1???  Come on!   HD-DVD is doing what Blu Ray says it can do right now.  I, like the rest of the world arent interested in waiting, waiting, waiting like your beloved Fox studios made you do simply because they wanted to use BD+ to prevent ripping.  News flash Fox, BD+ WILL be broken before XMAS!

And those of you yelling, "BAN PARAMOUNT"!  You are a joke.  Transformers in 1080p/TrueHD???  You are a total idiot if you pass that up!   Thats like me passing up SpiderMan Trilogy because I think Blu Ray is a rip off!    It is a rip off!  But I have no choice because the studios are forcing the consumer into the more expensive corner.   Blu Ray would succeed if the following were met:

FINALIZED hardware from the get go!   Its to late now, all those players made before this new Profile, lol, I cant wait to see the BD supporters cry wolf when certain titles cant be fully utilized by the end user, ie, Fox titles with DTS-HD Master Audio!!!   When Cars comes out, its supposed to have PnP like HD-DVDs do, but wait!  My BD player doesnt have a 2nd Video Decoder, will a software update enable this?  Doubtful.  If your manufactuer didnt bother to incorporate an ethernet port on your player I doubt they gave you a 2nd video decoder.  Good luck if you dont own a PS3.

CHEAPER hardware!  $500 for THE most basic BD player???  No.  Average Joe is not going to spend anything near that for a disc player.  Even $299 is asking a bit much.  Having a $200 entry level player is the sport!

Good luck with Profile 1.1!  Cant wait.

    -dad out!

I don't think Paramount has a final decision but, they need to make a difinitve decision in order for them to make profits (a ton of $$).......FOX and MGM are bringing out Fantastic 4: Rise of The Silver Surfer and Live Free or Die Hard on Blu-ray and that going to be a madness that would bring down Transformers and Shrek the Turd HD-DVD.....Decide, Decision, Decide, Decision = Blu-ray Disc.

Wake me up (along with 90% of the market) when a Bluray player is $99 and movies sell for $15. Why is any media company going to support Sony? They are a competitor. It's quite likely that when Sony's last $2Bn loan runs out the banks might not lend more money to cover operational losses. The cheap finance is drying up thanks to the high risk speculative American mortgage market. It's a big risk supporting Rootkit lovin Sony as everything they touch seems to go sour or catches on fire, or plain does not sell. UMD? What an arsup.

SONY FIX WHAT MATTERS MOST - GET SOME GAMES OUT PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!

Pull-eazzee!  If Universal saw no incentive to support Blu-Ray in 2007, they surely have less incentive now!

The Paramount / Dreamworks decision solidified HD DVD and bolstered its exclusive studio support.  Not to mention the imminent arrival of the sub-$200 Ventura HD player and the 3rd generation Toshiba line debuting in Sept / Oct.  Look at Videoscan data and you will see that HD DVD is gaining significant ground with 44% and 40% of software sales over the last 2 weeks.  Combine these facts with the higher cost of producing Blu-Ray and I can't see any reason for Uni to switch.  But this site loves to spread FUD, doesn't it?

Am I going crazy, or are there an unusual amount of anti sony hd dvd fanboys in here?  Don't you guys belong on an xbox site?  I mean what the ****, you guys are supposedly playstation fans, which I would have thought would make you a sony fan, and by the way, blu-ray kicks hd-dvds a** completely.  What does hd-dvd have going for it, besides being cheaper?  Nothing that I can see.  And at the point things are at, cheap doesn't mean anything, the sales are proving that.  At this point the main hd format purchasers are enthusiasts and are willing to pay extra for the superior format.  People keep saying that blu-ray is too expensive for the average consumer.  Well until hd tvs go down in price any hd format is going to be too expensive for the average consumer.  It's not an average consumer's product yet.  Most people that have chosen hd already have spent a lot of money on their set up, (TV, stereo, etc.)  and if they are going to spend that kind of money (because let's face it, it's not cheap yet) then they are going to want the best hd product for the system they spent so much money on, which hand down is blu-ray.  And the cheapest blu ray player on the market right now is the ps3 which I thought we were all supposed to be fans of here?  So if you are a fan of hd and the playstation then I see absoletely no reason why you wouldn't be for blu ray.  It comes pre installed in all of our dream systems.  I think that there are some hd-dvd fanboys who couldn't resist joining this site and pose as playstation fans to get their point across.  I have seen it on blu-ray's site too.  If you are a playstation fan, then support sony or get the **** off of this website.
