Best Buy is not the only major game provider discontinuing the sale of the 80GB PlayStation 3. Gamestop/EB Games has now been rumored to be following the same footpath. A reliable source from the employment field has stated that the SKU is now considered deleted and shipments will no longer be arriving. This is the same source that notified the online world that the 20GB model would be discontinued as well, so he seems to be reliable.
Apparently, Gamestop/EB Games has not been receiving shipments of the 80GB since November, yet has still been receiving large shipments of the 40GB unit. Kaizer_911, who happens to be the source, had this to say, “I went ahead and looked in our Back Office Inventory screen and found that the only SKU listed as Active for the PS3 consoles (new ones that is) was the 40GB. The 20, 60, AND 80 GB SKUs were listed as Deleted.”
He says that the database is a company-wide account and that this issue seems to be the start of discontinuing the SKU completely.
*Update: We have contacted Gamestop and found that it is official...Gamestop and EB Games will no longer receive shipments of 80GB PlayStation 3s.

i dont think they would increase the size of their HDD since its replaceable with other hdds on the market and many people know how to replace it and have done so already so a bigger hdd isnt needed...what's needed and which can help them is lowering the price on their console just to make it equal in price to the 360 or at least 50 bucks more
this move can help their sales overall instead of reintroducing a bigger hdd ...its like more of the same feature no price drops...and a feature customers can imprve themselves

hard drive size isn't really relavent when you can install a 2.5 sata laptop hdd in.more important features such as backwards compatability ,wi-fi,etc are what concern me in future models

My prediction is this.......40GB version to drop to 299. A new SKU again with no BC but with the mem readers, a 120GB HDD, a new game included and the Dualshock as the standard controller for 399. Then maybe they announce Emulation firmware release shortly.

Well the only thing that sucks about that is if you have warranty with bestbuy or ebgames. That will sucks cuz you wont get what you paid for, for example if you got a 60 gig and a 80 gig and it breaksdown for what ever reason and you go and get a replacement your stuck with the wac azzzzz 40gb which in my opinion is a waste of money. NO backwards compatibility only two usb ports. I luv my 60 gig I hope it never breaks because if it does and ther is nothing else but the 40gb then I will just get a wii and games.
The only thing I can think of is they are removing the old sku to bring the new ps3 with the dualshock 3 but I doubt it.

who cares. if you still have your PS2 and dont give a crap about backwards compatiblity then so what. Every one knows that unlike Xcrap360 us PS3 owners can swap out our HDD's for a bigger one like a 250GB for like 140 bucks. and ur local electronics store has em.

having to hook up two systems just uses up space. the whole point of BC is so you can conserve space. As for the idea of a new SKU that's probably the answer. The 80gb (the premium version of the system) will likely get the DS3 as a pack in and them be re-issued.
Mystery Solved.

Sony should discontinue the ps2 and put full ps bc in the 40 gig, anyone wanting a bigger hdd can just get a 250gb one.Maybe this is because they wanna shift all consoles to the 65nm cell, since the 80 gb still uses the 90nm,it must be considerably more costly to manufacture,w/e sony does,it better not be axing bc completely, cuz that'll suck......HARD!!

40GB comes down to $349. New console with no BC but with the card readers, 160GB HDD, DS3, $10 PSN card, 4 USB ports, and a new game (DMC4, AoT, GT5:P) for $499. Excellent idea if Sony does this.
And now the emulation job Sony needed filled will come into play...

I think they are going to have just the 40Gb. I also smell price drop. But whatever, something is definitely going on, should be very ineresting.

I don't think they're going to push up the size of the HDD. 80gb is more than enough and putting a larger drive in would just add to the price. Putting a Dual Shock 3 in the box with a pack in movie or game would be more than enougn and very likly all they're planning unless they want to use the gb size to denote which system is which...
Anyway I doubt it's a bad thing. The system has be steadily catching up to the 36* so there's little reason to offer only the 40gb version of the system when it's the crappier version.

Sony are making a big mistake by screwing around with their SKU's... 20, 40, 60, 80, what next? All but the 40 GB model, the worst one of the lot, has been discontinued. And whats annoying is they got it right the first time: 60GB. Thats the one to have.

I really hope the next generation of consoles doesn't happen like this. The longer you wait, the better deal you'll get, which doesn't fare well for the hardcore gamers.

things are getting a little to complicated it seems. i think they should just come out with one awsome console and leave it at that. and yes, it is unfair to give better deals to those who wait. but it has been that way since the begining of time. i dont think that will change. patience is virtue.
