VGchartz: 5 million PS3's sold to consumers

Vgchartz.com is reporting that as of October 13, 2007 the PlayStation 3 has sold over 5 million consoles worldwide.
- 2.13 million in the Americas
- 1.24 million in Japan
- 1.70 million in other regions (including Europe, Australia, and others)
Total of: 5.07 million units sold.
The PlayStation 3 was first released on November 11 2006 in North America, six days later in Japan and on March 23 2007 in Europe. The console sold on a weekly average of 105,208 units, mainly competing with Microsoft’s Xbox 360, which currently stands at 11.83 million units sold. The Wii stands at 12.42M units sold.
According to Vgcharts, their data is based off of number of units sold to consumers, and not number of consoles sold to retailers. They explain that this is the best way to do it as it accurately shows how many actual consoles are in people's homes.
Now possibly with the release of the new 40GB PlayStation 3 and the USD 100 price drop of the 60GB, we may see a large spike in U.S. sales as seen in the U.K. If sales continue you could see the PS3 be neck and neck with its competitors by next year.

Wasn't it stated that it's at 1.75 million in the US? 5 million worldwide? I'm willing to believe that, I guess. I thought the PS3 sold more in Europe than it did in the US, though.

That's pretty poor sales figures for X360, only around 12million after two years! Shows that the world isn't that interested in a heartless box! As for Wii, it is admirable and wish Nintendo well as they are the proven unprecedented dedicated video games hardware and software producer of all time! After over 20 years, they still haven't given up...unlike Atari, Sega and all the others who've tried and died!
Don't get me wrong, they're still Sony real arch-rival but they do have a younger market and target. Good luck them, they'll need it in a few years time after Sony (PS3) dominates once again!

ive been thinking that the playstation generation is mostly all grown up probably around 20-30's now. with that they probably have less time to game like me and or just dare i say it growing out of it, or its just not as important anymore, maybe thats why sales are slacking.

Well I'm 34 now and love gaming as much as I ever did. As for the Playstation Generation being grown up now is nonsence, since new younger gamers will be coming to the play games on Playstation year after year.

So where do the PlayStation platforms stand? PS2 is sitting pretty at over 120 million units sold. PSP is at a respectable 26 million sold, with 30 million expected to be surpassed shortly.
So where does that leave PS3? According to Kaz, PS3 has sold in between 5 and 6 million units, leaning slightly towards the 5 million end.
Expectations are high for the holidays however - Sony expects to reach 11 million PS3's by the end of the year. We reckon reaching that goal without a price cut will be a challenge and perhaps even miracle.
We'll keep you updated on sales of all PlayStation platforms as the year progresses. -

Wow, what BS. No one knows for sure. Nexgenwars.com has over 4 million ps3's sold. Then when you scroll down they say 6 million. We have been hearing crap like this for awhile. Its best to know what Sony knows. Only they can tell you how many have been sold to consumers.

correct me if I am wrong, but didnt the 360 sell 10 Million its first year? So your telling me that in the second year it only sold 1.83 million units? Thats pretty surprising considering the release of all their "big" titles this year. But I guess thats good news for PS3 if 3 big games can only sell 1.83 million units then maybe we will catch up sooner then later.

i'm sad to this but i highly doubt the ps3 will hit 11mil when the year ends. I can see sony getting to 8 maybe 9 mil units sold. thats my humble opinion. and when u think about it 8or9 mil units in one year is pretty damn good. its taken that other company 2 years to sell 11-12 mil units. sonys alright. theyll be fine. peace

First of all,VGcharts ALWAYS pull the numbers out of their @ sses.Secondly when did MS actually announce sold numbers, its always been shipped NEVER sold.Thirdly, since VGchart numbers have been banned from the forums, why is PSU using those as evidence?WTF

i hope sales soar with the announcment of this 40GB ps3 and the $100 price drop for the 80GB.....its hard to fathom why people still complain....people wanted a less costly ps3 well now you have one, just that BC, 2 usb ports, and card readers have been excluded.....if you want all those additional features well pony up more money and dont complain.....you get what you have pay for

I thought VGcharts wasn't the most accurate. And do the #'s account for online retailers such as amazon?

This is ridiculous, not on the numbers being given but the use of VGchartz in here. The forums banned it as the staff unanimously chose it as so yet PSU posts this? WTH indeed...
BTW: FYI I am a mod here so this is why I am a bit distraught at the use of VGchartz. :/

Folks, all PSU did was recycle an article that other web sites had posted. This is the same info from other sites. PSU just decided to post it anyway.

Aratacus, you are such an idiot!!!
"were already almost half way to 360's sales, in half the time"
Half way in half the time would be the same as the 360's numbers, think about it... so by this time next year Sony will have almost sold the same number as Microsoft has right now. Ha! The 360 out sold the PS in September 5 to 1, and with all the awesome titles coming out this fall, don't expect the PS numbers to gain any ground at all. Good luck with your Mensa class genius!
