Videogames division Sony's top priority, says Stringer

Sony Corporation Chairman Sir Howard Stringer has labelled the restoration of “profitability in our television and game businesses” the platform holder’s top priority.

Stringer’s comments come following the company’s annual shareholders meeting in Tokyo yesterday.

The electronics giant said last month that it expects its games division to turn in its first annual profit in three years, following the decision to lower manufacturing costs of its PlayStation 3 videogames console.

Despite this, Bloomberg reports that the PlayStation division lost USD 3.4 billion in the past two years under Stringer.

Stay tuned.

    "Videogames Divsion Top Priority"

... why are they saying the same things ... didn't Kaz say "First and foremost a games console" last week or so?  It's like they've had a crazy realization.  Think the thin air is getting to them.  Maybe it's the astoundingly large loss figures, which suprise me considering PS2 is still shifting millions of units and the PS3 has outsold the 360 in all regions but america.

And now they realise that they should think about gaming ... is it just me or isn't this like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted.

If you haven't had enough games to play, you need to do other things, seriously.  I've had a PS3 since launch and still own (in more or less this order) Marvel:UA, MLB 07, NBA 07, Heavenly Sword, Ghost Recon ADV WAR, Rainbow 6, Uncharted, MLB 08, COD4, Gran Turismo 5:P, MGS4.  I also like to play HVBowling with the family, and Poker Online.  Lastly, I have Super Stardust HD.  Now, there might be some game that you like that I don't that aren't even on this list like anything by EA (which I boycott).  As you see, GTA4 and Devil May Cry are not on that list either.  I also have a PSP and have that nifty God of War game and FF: Crisis Core.  At the beginning of the PS3 drought, I had time to play these, now it's hard to get through all of them.  But I'll be ok, because my next game is SOCOM, which isn't until September.

When they say "Videogames Division Top Priority" they are in fact refering to the playstation division of Sony.  Not video games themselves.  Sony makes many many different products.  For example, TV's. Car Steroes, Home Theatures, Movies etc.  Out of all the Sony Divisions, The Videogames Division is among the top areas Sony as a company plans to put even more focus into.  This has nothing to do with the HOME comments about how focus on games needs to be their priority now.  This is Sony as a huge company refering to just one of its many divisions.

Your point being what exactly?  Which is really the same as I want to say to Stringer and Hirai!

The list you provide are mostly if not all, are 3rd party titles and not much to do with Sony other than the fact that they're released on PS3.

ps If you don't boycott demos then try Battlefield : Bad Company.

pps Where's WarHawk on your list? eh? It's a shining example of what Sony should do more of.

I'm fully aware that they make other products.  I'm just suprised that with gaming being such a fruitful market should have peeked their interest a little sooner.

What do you mean peeked their interest sooner?  They invested an extremely large amount into the PS3.  Developing a system that they hoped would revolutionize gaming.  They sold that system at a heavy loss on each system sold and did everything they could to create a buzz around it (athough that backfired).  They then take about a year to start releasing top quality games (like every other system released throughout history) and now before its 2nd full year on the market are claiming to be making a profit.  Can you blame them for now wanting to throw their money again in the direction of the Playstation?  You act like this is their first time thinking about gaming.  Look at the lineup of games we have already seen this year and the ones that yet to come out.  Those gems didn't just start development last week.  It can take years to develope and if you ask me, Sony has been headed in the right direction for some time now, we only get to see the fruits of that labour now though.

you always lose money at first but you gain it back its business there is always risk involved but sony has always put priority to their videogames division its not something new they are reminding people that videogames is where its at for them its not some shocking realization

i think you guys are mostly missing the point. the ps3 was first and foremost a trojan horse to get blu-ray into as many homes as possible and win the HD format war. Sony has admitted so much already. The money they stand to make now with Blu-ray being adopted as the next generation of video format stands to easily exceed any loses the ps3 has taken. Sony said before the ps3 ever launched that they could sell 3 million consoles without a single game. (meaning as a blu-ray player alone) Sony is now changing gears and pushing their games and shifting resources and marketing from blu-ray video player to a video game console now that blu-ray can't be derailed. That is what they are trying to say folks.

I actully forgot about Warhawk.  I have that too.  MLB 07, MLB 08, NBA 07, Uncharted, GT5P, Warhawk,  Heavenly Sword--all 1st and 2nd party titles out of Sony's house.  What are you talking about "Most if not all are 3rd party"?  Out of the 11 Blu-Rays I named and own (plus the one you gave me, Warhawk), 7 were from Sony's house.  Now you're making up stuff to have a point.

It's just buisness. Companies loose billions more often than you think. I mean look at the xbox. they spent billions cramming the first one down everyone's throats despite the fact that no one wanted it. It wasnt profitable for 3 years either. The only consoles that were EVER profitable before their 3rd year are Nintendo's and that's because they dont spend as much on hardware development or marketing so they post a profit EVERY year even back during the N64 days.
