Yamauchi admits GT5 could be released "any time we want"

Polyphony Digital head Kazunori Yamauchi has reiterated that the developer could effectively release Gran Turismo 5 at any time, though admitted the reason this hasn’t happened is due to the fact he wants to take the racer “beyond gamer expectations.”
Speaking to the latest issue of Famitsu magazine (translated by the folks at 1up.com), Yamauchi-san commented, “The scale of this title is just dizzying, so daily progress is slow, but it’s still going forward at a steady clip,” adding, “All the basic stuff is complete, but we’re trying to give everything that little bit extra at present.”
“We could release it any time we want, really, but I want to have that classic GT-style ‘did we really have to go this far?’ feel going. I want to go way beyond gamer expectations.”
Gran Turismo 5 is scheduled for release in Japan on March 31, 2010. A western release date has yet to be pinned down.

@7, the games for spring 2010 will be overwhelming. I might have to get a loan..
This article is somewhat similar to the one where he states that he felt pressured to release the game earlier. It should of been released this year and follow it with a few DLC's later on instead of doing so next year, a year full of blockbuster titles that will eat away at our beloved wallets..

Well he already told us that didn't he?And we then said that the damage su cked hard,so Polyphony Digital went back to their high tech caves to add a whole new real time damage system, hopefully they'll go full fledged and not pre rendered half baked crap like rumored.

He must have a truely ridiculous budget to take such such a luxury postion. Most games are rushed to market through cost constraints. GT5 seems to be the exact opposite. Yamauchi has said "daily progress is slow" so they are clearly not feeling any pressure to speed things up. It's a position most game developers dream of.

You know what, yes this will make people angry and some people might not anticipate the game anymore...however, I don't think that matters.
Because if this game is as good as he says it is, then it doesn't matter how many people were pissed off. There's not many games in the sim genre this generation. So if the game is good, people will flock back to it.I think he's making the right choice. At this point, since there are going to be so many games coming out, you don't want to come out with something that's just great and then build upon it with patches, you want something that's going to blow people away, that first impression matters.
I think patches are getting ridiculous now, we don't need games rushed anymore because we're thirsty for them, we need games in their full form that would've been after the patches because we have already too many to play.

@16 (Seb) - Thats true, but Yamauchi did come out and say that they were under a lot of pressure to release it on time.
I think this news above is to let people know that its delayed for a good reason so therefore to decrease pressure on developers to release the game soon.
Personally i have no problem with when it comes out, as long as it now (at least) meets what we expect from a GT game that took that long.
The people that say they can't wait that long will probably change their mind once it comes out.

If he could release it any time he wants as if! if that was true then it would already be out.
Small talk from the big man.

In a way i'm hoping F3 is better now, PD are starting to make me angry... why say something like that? How many years now? If GT5 doesnt beat F3, by a lot as well, i'm going to laugh so hard. Ultimate driving sim... lol

@Seb
Well, if you consider the little extra made from Prologue then their budget may be a little better than many other developers.
It could also be that they want to go that extra mile for the gamers that helped them with the budget by buying the prologue.
You could read anything into it.
From my standpoint, they have a winning formula with GT & always have.
They just need to ensure the Tournament menu is not set up like Gt4 and that the online is much more funtional than what we saw in GT5P. Other than that, Im sure the game will be what GT has always been....a great racing/driving game.

If this releases in the Spring then it's bad news for me =(
Final Fantasy XIII is releasing then and other good games like GoW3 and Heavy rain.
This is just a racer so if this releases next to those games then I probably won't buy it until early-mid summer time.

That's awesome i think. Let them take it however far they want to take it. It only means a better game for us anyway. I think everyone will shut their yap when the game does it and it turns out to be more than worth the wait

@ 8 I hate having to download updates and If I'm going to buy a game for 60 dollars it better be well worth the money when I buy it. I don't want promises of future updates that I'll probably have to pay extra for!!!. Best things come to those who wait

I am sure it will be a great game but I also think expectations are too high and that is the reason they are still polishing the game.

NFS Shift > GT5. The damage modeling is better, the car selection is great, and the gameplay is fantastic. Oh yeah, and it is out already >.>

@ mcav. You hope my face doesn't miss my nose? I have about 30 games between now and christmas of 2010 I want and if they decide to drop GT5 an already finished game in the middle of a period when I've already decided to buy other games from companies that gave me realistic release windows then It'll just be put on the back burner and it I won't buy it. The game's finished but they don't want to release it yet? I could buy that if they didn't say this word for word last year.
Hope my face doesn't miss my nose? Fanboy much? You may hold this game in the "end all be all of video games" category but I assure you I don't. For you to think I'm somehow hurting myself by buying other games I'm more interested in just proves that you either an immature kid or a stupid adult.
Don't project your personal feelings onto others, it really shows your intelligence is lacking.

I dont think so, they havent even gotten the collision system running as it should. And they were saying i was going to be released in 2009. It is just a nice way to put it “beyond gamer expectations.” instead of saying there are still problems to be solve and things to be added, or just plain and simple....the game isnt done yet.
And the worst thing is that all my spendings are being pushed for next year...tons of great games XD
