Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida has declared that Media Molecule’s highly anticipated LittleBigPlanet will be the most important PlayStation 3 release of 2008 across all major territories.

Speaking to VG247.com, Yoshida stated, “LittleBigPlanet is going to be the biggest title for Sony in all markets this year.”

“History tells us how difficult it is for games developed in Europe or in the US to be successful in Japan, and with this generation we see Japanese consumer supporting more and more games coming from western Europe,” he added.

“It’s massively important, because it has so many things that it’s doing right in our minds.”

“That really shows the way the whole industry will be heading. Giving power to the consumers to express their creativity by creating something that’s fun for others to play. So we really want to make it a global success, including the Japanese market.”

LittleBigPlanet is scheduled for release in October 2008.

if they advertise LBP rite here in N.A it should sale well and be successful. but on the other hand LBP comes out in the middle of the game season from all three consoles and the first party exclusive. then you have third party games coming out and some of those games hold weight and have history behind them. Sony have two games with  history behind them R2 and SOCOM plus being realistic if the people who still have PS2  waiting for SOCOM to come out to buy a PS3. SOCOM have particle of out sailing LBP. they should start with tv ad's now to out shine gears 2 which come out a week after thats going to sale and will pull alot of people there way. you have bio shock thats going to pull people there way LBP have alot of hurdles to jump since its the new kid on the block.

Strange, it isn't released yet but it is already big. It's not even a known franchise like MGS, Socom, Motorstorm or Ratchet & Clank.

Is this very good marketing or is everyone really that interested in this game? I know I am, but why? I haven't even played it yet.

I'm more looking forward to R2 than LBP

he will look like a jerk if LBP turns out NOT to be the ultimate seller, of course I'm pretty much confident it will sell like hot cakes, but would be interested in his statements if it sells poor - what would he say then?

This is what many PS3 Forumers have been saying since the introduction of LBP, so its nothing new for some of us. Its such a fantastic looking game with great ideas, even if it is childish. But hey...call me an immature child.

Apparantly thats what women claim anyhow so I've grown immune.;)

sorry but mgs4 was the most important game this year for the ps3 and without the massive success of mgs4 and all the reviews loving it people would not of bought a ps3 to play it...in short mgs4 was a game people bought a ps3 for where not as many people will buy a ps3  just to play lbp.

The word of mouth alone probably has millions of people sold on this game already.

mark wesker mgs4 is an absolutely amazing game to be sure but it doesnt appeal to everyone like lbp does mgs4 appeals mainly to hardcore gamers and fans of the series and the like of which but lbp appeals to basically every market little kids teenagers parents and even grand parents because of the aesthetic and the approach of the gameplay and how flexible it is to say that this game wont sell ps3s even as good as mgs4 is downright foolish

As much as I love MGS4, I did think LBP has the potential (not saying it will) but it has the potential to sell more consoles than MGS4 because it appeals to a larger audience.

MGS4 was not the most important game of the year. It was for fans but thats about it. It probably only sold consoles to people who were already going to get one.

I really hope for Sony's sake this games meet atleast the minumum expectation or else it will e a heavy blow, because they keep hyping and hyping.

Sounds big.. sadly most of the PS3 owners i talk to and even myself still do not understand the concept or even think the game looks remotely fun.. as one said "it looks just like any other platformer".. so I think the big hurdle for Sony is to release a demo as soon as possible since there must be so much more to this game.. or I hope there is judging by the press hype!

#22, so in any other platform platformers you can create your own character? your own level?

    • 10:48am BST - September 2nd, 2008

@16 we`ll see, i bet mgs4 moves more ps3 then lbp will do.there was a massive surge of like 75,000 ps3 sold in week in japan when mgs4 came out, dont see lbp matching that.people who like lbp type games already have a wii, like u said ps3 is for the hardcore.i agree with 22 i dont really see the big deal with the game, looks amazing but think it will get boring fast. just ask urself this, which one would microsoft rather pinch for there console  mgs4 or lbp and i bet its mgs4.

Doesn't really matter, MGS4 pretty much can't work with 360, and we know they'll never get LBP. That said, I think LBP will sell a lot of units and systems because of the word of mouth, yeah it doesn't look thrilling but the appeal is massive and the opportunities (especially being able to sell your creations) is gonna grab tons of attention, even more when it hits shelves than now. I think it'll hit big in Japan, I'm no expert on Japanese culture (like some claim to be) but in my experience cutesy games with endless options seem like their fortay.

Also, I have to disagree with many of you in that there hasn't really been much hype for this (stay with me here) All I've run across so far is some lame-duck comments by the devs and 2 or 3 seconds of it on the PS3 commercial. BUT the hype is coming from people who have played it and us posters who have only seen and read about it. In short, we are doing all the advertising for them. A solid strategy if I ever heard of one.
