PS3 holds upper hand on Divx support?

In the latest fall update for the Xbox 360, Microsoft added the ability for DivX playback. However, the DivX support available on the Xbox 360 is minimal compared to that on the PlayStation 3.

According to Tech.Blorge.com, only certain DivX files will play on the Xbox 360 where as the PlayStation 3 will be fully certified with DivX support allowing for not only all videos to have DivX playback, but the ability for game developers to use the format for efficient compression for in-game cut-scenes.

This feature will help by providing smaller storage file sizes (better load times), less power consumption, and less heat output.

As of now, there is no official release date yet for the DivX support on the PS3. However, Sony has stated that it will be "soon" and will come packaged in one of the upcoming firmware updates. Stay tuned for more information.

Why would people use DivX over h.264, when h.264 is a lot better at comression, its the logical choice

I hope they introduce xvid too, like the 360. I don't see why they shouldn't, considering it's an open format.

it's good to hear good news, maybe once we get divx we might get xvid and why not the ability to read other formats, why should sony stop at divx?

zarajoe:  I agree with you, h264 is way better.  But most vids from the net are divx.  I already have my entire dvd collection on h264 on my ps3, and with this i'll be able to watch all my anime.  The ps3 is getting a lot closer to becoming a true media center.  I only wish sony had better support for the nero digital avc format.

Who's to say that by the time PS3 gets Divx, the 360 won't be updated as well? I don't think comparing something that's out to something that's not is fair. (Except for when 360 was out and PS3 wasn't yet, of course!) Remember UT3 was supposed to be mod-compatible, but it isn't YET. Is Divx necessary for in-game cutscenes? Doesn't that, in effect, hinder BluRay? Just a thought

Aratacus: go to stage6 (dot) com - it's all videos in DivX, it's exactly like YouTube in HD. There are thousands of 720p videos there in 1.3Mbit/s, streaming in DVD quality.

LOL. The 360 doesn't even support playback from the harddrive, it has to be streamed from a PC. The PS3 will support from harddrive, and all external sources.

Does this mean psn can use it, so trailers off the store will take up less hdd space ??? coz at moment trailers take up bout 25% of my hdd. The rest is mainly demos, but this not leave much room for porn and other important stuff like that !!

DivX support and in-game xmb in the same update will make it the best update yet before HOME.

DivX is great when all your hundreds of movie files are in this format. DivX is very common and I think the PS3 should've had his support from the start.

A question I have is why do developers need to use DivX or any other compression for cut-scenes when we have blu-ray with all that space? There is no need for compression and we should be getting uncompressed video and 5.1 or 7.1 audio through our HDMI cables. We ahve HDMI cables to stream uncompressed data but what's the point if the video is compressed? And I've seen some some not very high quality cut-scenes on PS3 games.

Yeah... I bought a 360 so I could get Divx support! Seriously who cares about the few Divx codecs that aren't supported! With all the games and extras, I could care less about it! The 360 is also a Windows Media Center Extender... it's all good!

This link shows all the data for what the xbox supports with divx http://blogs.msdn.com/xboxteam/archive/2007/11/30/december-2007-video-playback-faq.aspx

As for what it doesn't support i cant imagine using divx on Blu-ray, there is better HD Compression out there when you have all that space. Also, i don't understand the heat and power saving comment.

Lithgow brought up the issue of not being able to save to the hard drive. While that is true you can stream from any removable storage device or Optical Disc but even if it could save to the Hard drive. I cant imagine using it. Its honestly much easier to stream from my PC that is almost always on, its fast, stable, and convenient. (you don't even have to log in)
