No 120GB PS3 planned for UK, says SCEE

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has issued a statement confirming that the company has no plans to release a 120GB PlayStation 3 console in the United Kingdom.

The announcement comes following a slew of Internet rumours claiming that the North American branch of the electronics giant plans to discontinue the 80GB PS3 in favour of a higher end model.

However, speaking to Gamesindustry.biz this week, a spokesperson for SCEE stated, "We do not currently have any plans to release a 120GB PlayStation 3 in the UK.”

Despite this, speculation is rife that preparation on the introduction of a 120GB model is imminent, as reported yesterday via Internet blog website, Ars Technica.

Stay tuned for more information as it breaks.

Well, we haven't seen any of the 80gb yet.

This is totally effed up, we've already got the option to upgrade Hdd so why bother bringing out new models. WTF are Sony playing at? This is not fair to the consumer. Only confusing.

im more curious as to what the specs are going to be with this new sku... will it have backwards compatibility? Will it have the card readers again (tho thats hardly a concern)? A HDD is a HDD, any average joe can upgrade that, but for the 1st time buyers looking for features such as the ones i post here, you cant just add those in on your own

More then likey the ceasing sales of the 80 gig models are so Sony can introduce a new SKU with 120gig HDD, rumble controler, maybe a game. I still have storage issues with my 60 gig model and is awesome.

"do not CURRENTLY have any plans" but they may next week.  Anyhow, they said nothing about the US either, so i think it's almost a given.

I think the 60GB SKU was the best.  Good, easy, and reliable BC and a decent amount of HDD space.  If you are ripping all your CDs, or Streaming a bunch of movies, you will want more, but that can be upgraded, where BC can't.

    That's a surprise!

So we get PlayTV and we are expected to use it on a 40GB/60GB system. Great logic there SCEE

I don't even thini it will sell well in the UK since the 40gig seems to be more then enough over there. :/ In any case, I want to know if NA will get the same treatment.

Why would sony bother putting 120gig hdd in, because if you want alot of space buy your own hdd i mean anything over 60gig, cheaper ps3’s and then the price drop.

I think Sony will suprise us Americans. This is how it happens. We'll walk in to Best Buy in 2 weeks 1 day and see the 200Gb PS3 for sell. Then a day later Sony makes the anouncement of their new SKU.

    Didn't say anything about a 160GB PS3...

I still think Sony should go to 160GB, just so they aren't running the same storage as the 360 Elite.

Why not go all the way to the top and go for 250gb!!!  Heck, let's just go futuristic and become a SSD instead!!!!
