Sony confirms July 2 release for Firmware 2.40

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced today that the highly anticipated Firmware 2.40 update for PlayStation 3 will be available for download on July 2.
This latest update adds the highly requested XcrossMediaBar (XMB), allowing users access to the PS3 menu at anytime during gameplay by hitting the PS button on your control pad.
Using this functionality, gamers can check to see if any of their friends are currently online, send and receive messages as well as changing various settings without having to quit your current game.
As promised, a Trophies system has also been implemented, which acts as a means of tracking the number of achievements that the player has accumulated. In addition to Super Stardust HD, the following first party titles will offer Trophy support:
- -BUZZ! Quiz TV
- -LittleBigPlanet
- -MotorStorm Pacific Rift
- -NBA 09 - PS3
- -PAIN
- -PixelJunk Eden
- -Resistance 2
- -SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
- -Warhawk

Just noticed it on the playstation blog too. On the blog they are demonstrating trophies and right on the bottom of the article they say it's released on 2nd July o/
I hope Naughty dog updates Uncharted Drake's Fortune.

I just watched the trophy video on the blog and it looks great. Pretty much the same as Live but great non the less. They have implemented four different kinds of trophies as well as a feature simular to gamer score on Live.
Now just release it so we can try it!

@wintee no your not alone, i too cant really see what all the fuss is about.
Yeah ok being able to play your own music in game is nice (high velocity bowling for example already does it) but everything else.....pah! trophies.......woopy doo, what you gonna do with those??? Invite ya mates round to look at them???? But when all is said and done it kinda ALMOST completes the PS3 firmware especially being able to reply to messages.

People are so excited, including myself, because when you are sittin there playing a good game of mgs4 and your friend messages you saying "lets play warhawk" you cant do anything to tell him your coming or not. you have to leave the game, send him a message and then go back to the game only to have your friend send you another message...do you see where this is going? This is especially helpful in online games where there is no friend or lobby system so you can tell your friends what room you are in. In-game messaging is a HUGE deal

The reason you are missing is that we no longer have to quit out of a game to check a message over the PSN! You can just pause it, pull up the XMB and send/receive messages, and go back to playing. That's great! Plus, people have been asking for this for a long, long time.
Also, you don't have to quit out of a game to set up a wireless device (headset / PSEYE).

I like how Sony is doing this trophy system! And Thank you that Warhawk will support them!! All i need is Uncharted.. Once I beat Uncharted on Crushing, i will have done EVERYTHING. ( beaten the game a few times, all difficulties, all medals, etc. ) I want a trophy for that :P
It seems almost like chirstmas to some people commenting on the blog lol

Excellent news!! at long long last! Thats def one the good things about the Ps3 there's contunued improvements and developments, although some should have been available at release. Still its all good. This feature will seriously reduce my annoyance levels when I get a message at a critical point in a game! Now Home and LBP to look forward too! Hopefully we'll be able to have in Game chat with Friends, whom aren't in the online game, next!!

YESSSSSSSSS dude we get all the features live has and more (plus the trophy system design is alot better IMO) for free! and in 2 days this freaking rocks i love how you can compare trophys and such so easily and how much more convenient online gaming will be this update kics ASS
people are excited about it so much because 1 first and foremost the in game xmb and messaging and being able to launch directly into a game from another and being able to setup your mic makes online gaming WAYYYY more convenient and fun
plus the trophy system just adds a new level of competition i mean not only will you be able to try to best your friends on the games' individual leader boards now you can try to beat them in being an all around better gamer and trying to best their "level" its bragging rights its respect just like winning trophys in sports or even getting rep on these boards its competition and alot of people think its fun.
i for one really like it because it allows me to compete with people even if its a single player game which is AWESOME because i hate when i do something extremely hard in a game like beating the last boss without taking any damage and not getting recognition for it or something of that nature now competition isnt for everyone and in that case i can see why you wouldnt really care but alot of people do and look at it this way
you dont have to pay for features other people want
