Sony: No plans for March price cut

We reported earlier about an anonymous tip that has hinted towards a price cut sometime in March of 2009. With X360 receiving price cuts within the last couple of months, Microsoft has seen an increase in sales, something we'd imagine Sony trying to replicate. However, according to Sony, there are no plans in the mix for a price cut.
"There are no plans for a price reduction on PS3 in March 09, and anything reported on or discussed otherwise is purely rumor or speculation."
This all started over the weekend when that anonymous tip was delivered to the online magazine, D+PAD. Since then, forums have been ablaze discussing the laundry list of information this source has supposedly leaked.

stupid, stuipid sony.
Xbox seeing an increase in sales? UMM YEAH! 360's this week have MORE than doulbled ps3 sales for this week all over the world. Has Sony paid any attention to Vgchartz.com? The 360 is wiping the ps3 all over the floor like its a old and dirty mop. It disgusts me , more than playstation's owner;Sony, I suppose.

The rumor also could have been started and "leaked" by the competition. Ever think about that? That rumor goes around, and people even thinking about getting a PS3 don't even do it for the Holidays. If I was MS, that's what I would do. And trust me, they did.

Couldn't agree more edward_moffet. Do you really think Sony are going to let you know there's going to be a price cut 4 months before? That would jeopardise any sales they have before the price cut takes place. That would be stupid of them do to so. If there IS going to be a price cut, they'll tell you when it makes business sense to do so. Wars are won by good strategy. They could probably take advantage of the holiday season, but probably think it would be better to hit the consumer when AAA titles like RE5 and Killzone arrive.

D+PAD? You guys are feeding us "news" from other sites? Man... I... Geez... I just joined this site, it seem pretty legit, I have made some fairly decent threads, I have, IMO, posted some fairly decent replies, my "sources", for my replies and threads are mostly magazines, which I think are more than reliable, I mean, you don't see PLAYSTATION MAGAZINE reporting that EGM made an article about how the NINTENDO is going whatever. My point is this PSU.com you rock, but seriously, do your own news, otherwise don't post your own scores for games, next time just tell us what GAMESPOT.com rated METAL GEAR SOLID 4. Peace I'm out.

In my opinion, Sony DOESNT need a price cut, think about it the PS3 currently stands at £299 ish for the console and a few games, Microsoft want you to think you are getting a bargain by buying one of their consoles for £129.99, cheaper than a Wii, but after you have bought the charging kit £12.99, keyboard kit £24.99, 12 months xbox live membership £39.99, Wireless adaptor £59.99, camera £34.99, wireless headset £39.99, 120 GB Harddrive £99.99 and an extra wireless controller £32.99, all in all £425 ish (prices from www.game.co.uk) just to get it to PS3 specs, you might as well of gone and got the PS3 for £299 and saved the extra £125 on games, plus PSN is free (for now) and you dont have to pay every year, its down to Pychological thinking on Microsft, making you believe those ads they have on TV, think you are going to go out and buy the console for such a bargain price £129.99 without all the extras, until you see the * for one of their services, i think its the Netflix streaming advert they currently promoting, then says hard drive required, so you gotta spend an extra £100 ontop boosting upto £130 ish, i paid £425 + extras on my PS3 on March 23rd 2007 and am a very happy owner of a 60gb B/C PS3, microsoft NO THANKS, nuff said

PS3 doesn't need a price cut. No reason for sony to do it. Sells? Who gives a sshhh iittt, because eventually their system is gonna pick up and crush the crapbox w/ its AAA titles and incoming applications. PSN, Home, updated firmware, 1080 mofo'n P, Divx, Internet, Mofo'n Blue mofo'n ray game & MOVIE playa, linux, 7spu's for developers to play with, to give us better graphics, better physics, in conjunction with the Blue ray disc-- F***! The Ps3 shouldn't be compared to the 360. Sony knows what they are doing. Once the developers know the way of the PS3 with ease, then, people will know its true power. Then sells will pick up, economy will become stable.

7 & 8, absolutely. i agree. it makes perfect business sense to deny any price cut. it's all hearsay until an official word comes out. yes, we all know that sony is going to start using the smaller cell processor first of the year (March perhaps?) that would coincide with this rumored price cut. if you have a console already, why are you so worried who wins? the hefty price tag for the PS3 is because of the new technology that was designed and invested in by sony, toshiba, and ibm. or has anyone forgotten that. and any who thinks that either one will simply walk away from the cell and the rsx and invest in something completely different is a retard. you do not walk away from a $400 million investment just because you are not making money right off the bat. nobody makes money on a new investment unless they have everything worked out to a degree where efficiency is maxed out and costs are reduced right off the bat. give them time. when it does, it will be magic.
#11: that's right, too. M$ wants you buy all this extra crap and it does come out to being MORE than a PS3. they don't even give everything to the buyer like sony does. my son has one and it's expensive to buy all that stuff. you mentioned $99.99 for a harddrive. that's correct and it only costs $40 to $50 for a 120 GB HD for the PS3. now who's cheaper? PS3 of course. i had a talk with a guy in a store one day last week and he asked me what the differences were in the 2. i said a lot. he was stunned. then i told him all about the features of both and he agreed that even for an upfront price of $399, that was a bargain. he then got one and left.

well sony wouldn`t admit it .wouldn`t be good idea to give ur rivals a date for a price cut but either way thats way too late tbh.should be just be4 chrimbo to get max sales.doesnt make sence, its well known microsoft, sony expect to make a loss on consoles, they make it up in software royalties.its always been done this way so why is sony being so bothered about cutting the price.if the install base aint there then they aint gonna get enuff software sales, which also means devs like square n capcom turning to microsoft .tut tut.come on sony

Number 11 basically just nailed everything. But what if the PlayStation 3 was at a price of between $200-300 [the normal model] with the price of the 160GB model at a price of $400 because of the price cuts which also include extras?
I can bet you people would buy that over Xbox 360, even though that model of Xbox 360 by it self is cheaper, but then is deerer if you buy the extras as you've pointed out. Up until the Xbox 360's price cut, PlayStation 3 was crushing it month to month left, right and centre. And I think its time Sony realises in order to do this again, they must have a price cut.
