PS2 price cut could steal Wii market share, says Sony

Sony America’s John Koller has stated his belief that the PlayStation 2’s newly introduced $99 price tag will help pinch a significant amount of market share away from Nintendo Wii in the U.S.

Speaking to GameDaily, Koller stated: “We do think the $99 price point could steal some share [from Wii].”

Koller also highlighted similarities between both machines, noting that Nintendo’s system is closer to the PS2 from a technological standpoint in comparison to current generation platforms. Furthermore, he also believes the price cut will facilitate Sony’s efforts in attracting a wider demographic, specifically, 'young and female' audiences.

“From a technological standpoint, the Wii is much closer to the PS2 than it is to the next-gen consoles. It’s obviously not an HD box and the software development is on a par with where PS2 development is, so that’s a much more realistic and similar demographic,” said Koller.

“We feel very confident that the $99 price level will allow us to grab our share [of the young and female audience]”

Steal away some numbers from the Wii? Maybe.

I just hope in Sony's case this doesn't cannibalize some PS3 numbers.

I have to admit I would usually back Sony's stand point........but comments like this certainly seem a little deluded.

    @1

    Lol, because your right.

What is the point in all of this?

    PLAYSTATION 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats where the time should be spend, very few care about the ps2 any more. It isn't gonna take market share off wii, even if it did, so wot?  Sony should be thinking about taking market share off Microsoft, cuz however thay dress it up with pr rubbish, microsoft are running off with the numbers.

Yeah but at this point most people have a Wii already, Just the other day I was at wall-mart and they were stocked full of wii's. The only thing hard to find is what I hear is that ridiculous Wii fit accessory. So pretty much what I'm trying to say is that there is not a whole lot of room for Sony to pinch the Wii's market if almost everyone has one already. It's a little late in the game for that.

I don't think that Sony quite understands the Wii's success...they think that the Wii's biggest success factor is the price point...when in reality it's not. The Wii's success lies in it's controller and the idea that it motivates players to get off the couch and into the action. True, it's not the hardcore scene's console of choice (I personally hate it) but small children and old people are eating the console up like it's friggin quaker oats. Oh well, some console deprived individual is going to have an awesome price point for a great system!

They could hand out PS2's for free and it wouldn't steal the Wii market.

this is funny, they should at least make the controllers wireless. The Logic in this is questionable to say the least, I guess they think that if people have a PS2 they are more likely to stay with Sony and get a PS3.....   whatever.   sell more PS3's!!!!

Push the PS3, the PS2 is great and I still have it hooked to my HDTV but we need the support for the PS3....this would include the video store in Canada as well.

they need to focus more ps3 not ps2. I mean come on, sony. What the matter with you. I am a playstation fanboy. O.k. But how is this going to help sony make money? Ps2 is in the past now, every house hold got one now like more than 4 years ago. Not everybody got ps3 now, which i do. Lol. But point is you need to focus more on ps3 and psp now.

PLEASE SONY FFS, PLEASE FOCUS ON THE PS3. A "BIG ANNOUNCEMENT" ABOUT A PRICE CUT ON THE PS2 IS NOT THAT BIG A DEAL. I WISH THE NEWS WAS ABOUT SOMETHING PS3 RELATED, DON'T CARE ABOUT A PRICE CUT BECAUSE I ALREADY HAVE ONE, BUT I DO WANT TO HEAR ABOUT NEW FIRMWARE UPDATES, NEW EXCLUSIVE GAMES, NEW THINGS FOR HOME, SOMETHING NEW ABOUT PS3. WHO THE F DOESN'T HAVE OR HAD A PS2 STILL, PS2 PRICE DROP IS NOT IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO EVEN BE NEWS IMO.

That's complete BS. The system is 9 years old. There isn't a new flood of content coming out for that system. They sure aren't going to steal any Wii market share.

  22. jasper1605

    • 8:53am EDT - April 1st, 2009

They're market research team should have been fired a long time ago.  If people only bought systems based on what's inside of it the ps3 and 360 would be absolutely crushing the wii.  But as we see, the wii kind of is beating those 2 systems.  Now what can this un-paid non-market-researching simpleton deduct from that? PEOPLE DON'T BUY BASED ON TECHNOLOGY STANDPOINTS THEY BUY ON ENTERTAINMENT VALUE!

I know! Maybe they're going to push it as a DVD player again. That'll do the trick.  I'm all about SONY and the ps brand but ever since they uttered ps3 from a PR standpoint they've had very few intelligent things to say about it.  From advertising to overconfidence they've done everything they can to ruin their chances.  While a rubix cube being blown up is cool, how does that make a non ps3-fan go out and buy the system?

Sony needs to HEAVILY rethink their marketing strategies-- best of luck to them.

Yes!  SONY ADVERTISE THE PS3!    It pisses me off when I see a game advertised on TV and afterwards it says "Out now on xbox 360".    Thats why people are buying them.

PS2 is still going strong after nearly 10 years, which is good. And sony havent just dropped PS2 owners which is also good. But they seriously need to promote the PS3 more.

STOP COMPLAINING! It's a price drop for christ sake, it's a good thing for everyone.

If they ahd done this without making a fuss over it without any articles etc. Then nobody would complain, but everyone got their hopes up for something else and now they're throwing tantrums.

I think the biggest benefit of this price cut is that Sony will be able to hold onto their "Most consoles sold" record for a little bit longer, since the DS + DSi are close to beating it.

If tha PS2 have been out for 9 years that mean tha 10 year plan is almost up.And look at tha games thats coming out in tha future so I think PS3 owners will be happy in tha future.Man there is alot of whining on here.Just over tha price drop of tha PS2 dam some of ya'll need to get a life or something.

LMAO Yeah right. Keep dreaming Sony. This is not the same Sony that brought PS1 and PS2 to their glory back in the day. Its sad to see a good company like Sony making one blunder after another. The decisions Sony is making these days really leave a person scratching their head.

APRIL FOOLS! We're really cutting the price of the PS3 and PSP. Hahaha... ha... no joke?

    "Doh!"

Sorry but this isn't a wise move. A price drop on the PSP or the PS3 might have been nice, but doesn't everyone and their goldfish ALREADY have a PS2? They need incentive for more people to jump abord the PSP and PS3 bandwagon, not continue riding the PS2 train when it's near the end of the tracks.

The PS2 games are starting to trickle out, as well. Unless you know a place that still stocks the better PS2 games, there's no incentive to buy a system with fewer and fewer games.

The price cut on the PS2 is only good if:  a) your PS2 has recently died, or b) your backwards compatable PS3 is dead, like mine  :'(

Come on, Sony, quit trying to justify your bad plays and get your heads in the game!

I always thought that with the release of the Wii there should have been a relaunch of the ps2 by marketing it for casual gamers instead of hardcore gamers.  they already have a bunch of casual games available for it.  plus at a much lower price the ps2 should easily be able to compete with the wii for many years still to come, while the ps3 focuses more on the hardcore gamers.

i think sony should stop trying to make to much profit off the ps2 and sell it for something like $10 profit on production price and just keep ot like that for the rest of its days

I paid freaking $128 to get my PS2 repaire after my brother steped on it few months ago. And didn't play more than 10 hours. I am an idiot. should have got a brand new one :.....(

Maybe they should retire the PS2 and use that cost saving to lower the price on the PS3.

You would think that we were going backwards with time. Its like a count down, PS3 to PS2. its  like PS2 came out two years ago. next they will say that the ps1 will be a better value then the DS and will still there share. SONY you do have the hardware but when it comes to putting it out and selling it, you are dumb. Thanks to you fans for really selling your products, because without us you wouldnt have any sells.
