Sony facing litigation over Cell Processor

Sony may be in deep water again over patent infringement. Parallel Processing, a California based company, filed a lawsuit on July 26th in a US District Court against Sony on the grounds that the company knowingly infringed upon patent number 5,056,000, which was filed in October 2001.
The patent dubbed "Synchronized Parallel Processing with Shared Memory" lays out the groundwork for a processor quite similar to the Cell, which divides up a task into separate pieces to be run by parallel processors, and then placed back together again as a "final" product.
The plaintiff demands damages be rewarded, along with all attorney fees and interest lost. On an even scarier note, they also want any item containing a Cell Processor to be recalled and destroyed, including every PlayStation 3 sold. Hopefully, common sense will prevail as Sony's team of lawyers prepare for another potentially long and drawn out case.

not letting the money i wasted on my ps3 go down the drain because of a stupid lawsuit. this company is broke and is just looking for some money...how come they place this lawsuit now? after sony is making money out of the ps3's? and not when it was in its prototype stage when it was clearly stated that it was going to have this hardware...fuk that 5h!t

I think they lost the case as soon as it said "Shared Memory". Sounds like someone is trying to make a quick buck.
- 10:57pm EDT - July 30th, 2007

Sony hits 6mill sales and suddenly they realise after 6 years some one has infringed there coppy right, i think not, also note the "quite similar" not exactly the same, same s#!t happend with the chearch with all similar notice now that went away, M$ is just paying people to cause sony truble
- 11:37pm EDT - July 30th, 2007
just because sony is big, everybody wants a piece of it...
and it took them time to realize that...
- 11:46pm EDT - July 30th, 2007
Why is this even in the news? Cell is not produced by Sony, its produced by IBM, so if anyone is infringing - it's them. True, It was a joint development of IBM/Sony/Toshiba, but this news stinks so much I don't know why is it reported on at all.
BTW should all IBM Cell Blade servers be recalled and destroyed too???
- 11:52pm EDT - July 30th, 2007
Damm! not again. Is this sue Sony year! And no one is touching my PS3. Over my dead body!

"The patent dubbed "Synchronized Parallel Processing with Shared Memory" lays out the groundwork for a processor quite similar to the Cell". This will be a no brainer, it's like heinz sueing another company making baked beans that are similar to theirs. And by using the word similar it is not the same, you can only sue someone if its of same design. Not similar design, again its like sueing someone for creating a pair of headphones just because they both have two ear pieces.

lol exactly similar , i didnt even realized that , good point , they lost ... lmfao @ destroy all sold ps3 comment ,,,, is still funnny ,,,lmfaoooooo

Sony gets the Cell tech from IBM. This is where it is funny. Sony wouldn't be the company to sue, IBM is. Stupid BS

- 2:12am EDT - July 31st, 2007

More idiots trying to sue sony over somthing they dont actually have a direct patent on, not to mention the fact that even if they did, sony didnt develope cell they didnt even come up with the idea for it. these loosers will be laughed out of court.
