Sony facing litigation over Cell Processor

Sony may be in deep water again over patent infringement. Parallel Processing, a California based company, filed a lawsuit on July 26th in a US District Court against Sony on the grounds that the company knowingly infringed upon patent number 5,056,000, which was filed in October 2001.

The patent dubbed "Synchronized Parallel Processing with Shared Memory" lays out the groundwork for a processor quite similar to the Cell, which divides up a task into separate pieces to be run by parallel processors, and then placed back together again as a "final" product.

The plaintiff demands damages be rewarded, along with all attorney fees and interest lost. On an even scarier note, they also want any item containing a Cell Processor to be recalled and destroyed, including every PlayStation 3 sold. Hopefully, common sense will prevail as Sony's team of lawyers prepare for another potentially long and drawn out case.

I think they lost the case as soon as it said "Shared Memory".  Sounds like someone is trying to make a quick buck.

Why is this even in the news?  Cell is not produced by Sony, its produced by IBM, so if anyone is infringing - it's them.  True, It was a joint development of IBM/Sony/Toshiba, but this news stinks so much I don't know why is it reported on at all.

BTW should all IBM Cell Blade servers be recalled and destroyed too???

"The patent dubbed "Synchronized Parallel Processing with Shared Memory" lays out the groundwork for a processor quite similar to the Cell". This will be a no brainer, it's like heinz sueing another company making baked beans that are similar to theirs. And by using the word similar it is not the same, you can only sue someone if its of same design. Not similar design, again its like sueing someone for creating a pair of headphones just because they both have two ear pieces.

Sony gets the Cell tech from IBM.  This is where it is funny.  Sony wouldn't be the company to sue, IBM is.   Stupid BS

More idiots trying to sue sony over somthing they dont actually have a direct patent on, not to mention the fact that even if they did, sony didnt develope cell they didnt even come up with the idea for it. these loosers will be laughed out of court.
