PSP processing power limited by wireless play

Website Beyond 3D is reporting that up to a third of PlayStation Portable’s processing power is reduced while utilizing the handheld’s Wi-Fi capabilities.

Using the Firmware 3.5 clock control function, tests recorded the system running at its peak performance of 333mhz; enabling the Wi-Fi adapter, however caused the frequency to drop down to 222mhz during gameplay. As a result, it is speculated that developers may opt to degrade the performance of the one player mode in titles that feature network play, though those that are completely offline will remain unhindered.

When contacted, Sony declined to comment any speculation. Expect more details as they become available.

This is kinda old news.  If you've ever used any homebrew that allowed you to adjust the clock up to 333, you probably noticed you weren't able to use WiFi (while running at 333mhz.

PSP is a sad excuse for a handheld. Barely any good games for it. Make original games for PSP Sony not some crappy ports of PS2 games which make up a large quantity of the games on PSP. Sony probably enjoys getting it's butt handed by the DS.

The only thing that is keeping the PSP alive is homebrew and emulation.

Yeah, the PSP is actually a snazzy little device.  SOCOM was the shlt, even online...my experiences with that were flawless.  Syphon Filter has been the best game IMO and was even crazier online.  The PSP replaced my broken ps2 for a while, until I was able to get a PS3.  Now the interconnectivity between the two is crazy.  PSP rules, as does the PS3.  Sony Woot Woot

mate you do know that the psp wasnt competing with the ds in the first place? Its multi media functions and such where its best features. real internet access, music player, video player, picture viewer and the compatibility with the ps3 which will only increase. tell me can the ds do all that? no because its primairily a game handheld the psp is an allrounder.

DS isnt handing the PSP anything. 22+ million sold seams pretty good to me. Sure the DS has sold double that, but the PSP is here to stay with a user base that large. I will be buying a slim when it launches and giving my original to my son, so the slim may help sales even more.

"The only thing that is keeping the PSP alive is homebrew and emulation." ...Wow that's the most retarded thing I've heard since.. hmmm, Oh I know! "Barely any good games for it. Make original games for PSP Sony not some crappy ports of PS2 games which make up a large quantity of the games on PSP." Idiot, it's the supposed "homebrew" that HURTS the freaking system. Developers arnt going to make new games if hackers keep busint it so that people can run downloaded UMD games! Sony makes little or no money on the hardware it's the games that put money in their pockets but it's retarded thinking like your's that keeps developers from using the system to it's best possible degree. Also for you information there are a bunch of brand new titles being delivered for the PSP that arnt exact copies of other games but of course your short sighted ignorance keeps you from see that.

<---------------- dayum alpha you spitting hot lava @ him..... True points tho. I think doing all that mod-ing to a psp does kill the lifespan of it.

I dont think that theres any real answers as to why the PSP is where it is right now.. I just purchased a PSP (The Gold one from Japan).. And I have to say that are arent really games specifically made for the PSP.. But it is also a fact the deve's in North America are to excited to make UMD games to be pirated.. What does puzzles me is like with priacy being such a concern.. Why are the Japan PSP game so much better in development then the US one.. They have more out of the ordenary games and even with out being able to under stand a damn work, I can see, who the game "really looks like it was made for the PSP".I mean I know that they make the damn thing over there.. But I would think that priacy would be more of a concern in Japan and other Asian countries then here in the US..Even My PSP has more options on the XMB.. Portable TV!!!! , PlayStation Spot!!!

BTW I dont Homebrew, Im speaking in reference to the free PSP game downloads that I get from my Japan PS3 acct. and in no way am I stereo typing Asian's..lol
