Analysts discuss PS3 Madden 08 issues

UBS analyst Ben Schachter believes that negative press surrounding the PlayStation 3 version of Madden 08 (as seen in publication USA Today) may have a substantial impact on how Sony’s latest console is perceived by mainstream audiences.
"The blogosphere is full of posts highlighting the relatively weaker performance of ERTS's Madden NFL 08 game (released 8/14) on the PS3 vs. the Xbox 360", he said. "Such detailed discussions of slow frame rates and performance are not typically considered important by Wall Street. But given Madden's popularity and the volume of this debate, we think this is a more meaningful negative for Sony than investors might realize, as it gives gamers just one more reason not to buy a PS3 this year following the slip of GTA IV. It is a positive for MSFT”.
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter demurs this, however, observing that developer Electronic Arts, like many others, are still getting to grips with PS3’s hardware, compared to the Xbox 360's which has been available for a longer period of time.
"Analysts are too quick to criticize," offered Pachter. "There are obviously PS3 games that look fantastic. It's not an issue with the PS3, notwithstanding what EA said. It's an issue with how they built Madden for the PS3. Remember, EA doesn't have much experience on the PS3. From what I can tell, the frame rates for NCAA Football and Take-Two's All-Pro Football were equally slow, and nobody complained about them. Eventually, EA will figure it out, and nobody will care.”
"In the meantime, analysts who are quick to criticize will run around like chicken little claiming that the sky is falling, and journalists who are quick to criticize will print their opinions without checking with me first," he added.
Concluding, Pachter suggested that fellow analysts might consider pointing their attention to the recent warranty issues plaguing the Xbox 360, adding, "The PS3 is a fantastic console, and anyone who has one knows it's awesome. The Xbox 360 is also fantastic, but has no Blu-ray playback, and has been plagued with warranty issues. One would think that stupid analysts would be writing about the 360-warranty issue, and how people will avoid that box until they can be assured that they won't see the 'three red rings of death.' I love my PS3 (and love my 360), and can't wait to watch 300 in 1080p."
Once more, we at PSU can only concur with Pachter words. Developers need sufficient time to acquaint themselves with new hardware, and the PlayStation 3 is certainly no exception. Nonetheless, we can only hope that the mainstream audience does not use the recent Madden issue to be dissuaded from investing in Sony's next-gen offering.

I don't care for Madden anymore. Not much has changed for the series since 05. If EA is having problems with the hardware and specs, why don't they go talk to the guys at Insominac. They got it right the first time with Resistance. EA lazy mf!!

As I've said elsewhere, I'm not an EA hater, but their so-called "reasons" for their problems are little more than excuses. It needs to be remembered that the majority of developers have had the PS3 for the same amount of time as EA - in fact, given their position in the industry, EA have probably had it longer than most.
But when you see the results that others are getting already, it's difficult to see EA's story as little more than a smokescreen for what must be some pretty inept programmers.
Ubi have said that PS3 is no more difficult than any other system - just 'different'. And the CoD4 devs have stated on CharlieOscarDelta.com that they have the same 60fps framerate and AA on both PS3 and 360 versions of the game.
So come on, EA - get your finger out of your collective butt and put some effort into it!

This article doesn't hurt the PS3 at all justme911, read it. It's about how EA is still getting a grip on learning how to program for the PS3 and how developers were having problems with the 360 after it came out as well. He also mentioned that he finds it odd that Microsoft isn't getting all the bad publicity, because they've got the massive defection problem.

The recent Madden botch by EA Sports on the PS3 is a temporary bruise on the potential of the PS3 with consumers. We have to keep in mind that both Sony and Nintendo own a much larger popularity worldwide and that Madden only has a U.S. appeal. Whereas, it is truly Winning Eleven:Pro Evo that will need to be precise and even more excellent on the PS3 than any other sports game. While Madden will sell well in the U.S., this would not be nearly as noticed(just personal opinion not to be forced on anyone) if Lair and Warhawk both released on their original release dates. Many were looking to Madden in order to hold them over until the Heavenly Swords and Ratchet and Clanks of the world come out. I have talked with a few people who have decided not to get the PS3 until Metal Gear Solid comes out. Now, once Lair and Heavenly Sword are released, first party titles such as those may change their mind, but this is where the wait that Sony has put gamers through with First Party Titles, truely can make that bruise last a bit longer. At the end of the day, some will enjoy Madden, no matter how bad it is, simply because it is Madden.

psn id: gingo... i still stick with the story that EA were very very lazy in developing Madden for the ps3 because other games have got 60fps quite easily but since next years madden is being developed on ps3 that should make a huge difference. Michael Pachter really knows whats he talking about, everyone should respect this guys opinion

played madden, not impressed at all!!!!!!!!!!!! Feel sorry for who dropped $60 on that half-ass turd.. The game looks fuzzy & the load time is unexcusable. I'm glad I cancelled my preoder. I will most likely cancel the rest of my EA games. Not the ones their publishing, just the ones they are developing. I cancelled Burnout, Medal of Honor. There goes $120 to a developer who gives a damn about games. EA continue to make half-ass games for the WII-WII..

Exactly. Some of tThese analysts do not know what they are talking about. Some people may be fed up with Madden in general. This may not hurt PS3 sales, just Madden sales.

Personally,i don't really care about third-party developers all that much because they need more time get acquinted with the architecture of any console, than the first party. So give them some time, becuz even EA has made it's fair share of good ps2 titles, but not from the get go obviously.
