Blu-ray will become "major driver" for PS3

Sony has always touted the PS3's Blu-ray capabilities, after doing the same with the world's most successful console, the PS2, and its DVD support.

According to Frank N. Magid Associates, over two-thirds of all PS2 owners have used their PS2 as a DVD player at some point, and more than 15 percent of owners report that they use their PS2 to play DVD movies regularly. Now, several months after the PS3's launch, over 80 percent of PlayStation 3 owners have reported using the system as a DVD player and 20 percent said they use it for DVD playback frequently.

Consumers who watch high definition content on their TVs have grown accustomed to quality and detail of the picture, according to Magid. As the growth of HDTV sales continues along with the increase in demand for HD content, the PS3 will strongly appeal for those who want not only a game console, but also an effective Blu-ray, high definition movie player.

I have used it and I have to say that after you do it is hard to watch movies that aren't in HD.

Duh they aren't, the DVD's are a bit sharper but unless you get a blu-ray, it won't be HD.

If you've got an HDTV, blu-ray and hddvd (don't hit me) both look amazingly good compared to regular DVDs. I used my PS2 as a DVD player and I plan on using my PS3 as a blu-ray player.

May abandon PS3 as a BD player soon if DTS-HD Master Audio isnt added before other Setup boxes are released.  Getting tired of BDs hardware inconsistancies.  :(  But back on subject, I dont think that BD playback is a driving force for the PS3, the fact that it has (NOT YET) kick *ss exclusive titles (Haze,Little Big Planet,MGS4)

Whats VHS??? Ohhh... you mean that big black brick from the 1800's that you need 4 filling cabinets to store 3 movies in.

I use my PS3 now for all my DVD playback. The only Blueray movie I have is Casino Royale and the picture quality is superb on my Hi-Def TV. However, my normal DVD's also look SO much better playing though my PS3 as opposed to my normal DVD player. My normal DVD player was also a very good expensive model, but I think it falls down now because it only uses a scart cable to connect to the TV which is vastly inferior to HDMI. I also now use my PS3 to play all my music (which I've mp3'd) though my surround sound setup. Soon I'll be able to use it as a PVR too (so glad I upgraded it to a 250GB hard drive). My PS3 has become the central hub in my whole setup. What a BRILLIANT piece of kit the PS3 is!!!!!

Can I change my name to dragon1989isaTOOL?  Every comment this dude has made has been "I dont care" or "so what?"  So this tool is 18 apparently, acting like hes 12.

Anyway, I hope that PS3 and Blu-ray together can win this war.  BD is by far the best format out there.  Despite being outsold by the competition, for stand alone players.  But the software sales are still 2-1, and for that reason I am proud to be an owner of the next (current?) Generation.

Who gives a S*it about movies - I purchased this playststation for games and Im tired of waiting for something half decent to come out. Most of all Im tired of this repetitive "you want to watch Bluray Movies" blowjob they keep spamming us with. Fact is I dont care if Bluray movies dissapears next year I do care that they are not focusing on releasing QUALITY GAMES that justify my purchase. Games not dumb movies.

My DVDs look amazing up-converted. BD does look better for sure though. I am actually using 4 PS2s right now as dvd players. When the price for the PS3 gets down to 129, I'll probably have 4 or 5 of those as well.
