PS3 awarded Best Media Centre in Europe

The European Image and Sound Association have awarded the PlayStation 3 the Best European Media Centre 2007/2008.

The award page copiously details the reasons for this, citing the machine’s large hard drive capacity, web browsing, multiple video codecs, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a Blu-ray drive that can play all types of disc medias, the ability to upscale, and other features that make it good for the job.

EISA is made up of 47 different magazines spanning 18 European countries, so these guys know what they’re talking about. They even said the PS3 was an awesome gaming system. But you can read that for yourself here.

So anybody who needs a media centre, and is a bit daunted by building a PC, the answer to your troubles is the PS3.

Stay tuned.

What idiot made that decision? The PS3 is nice for some things, but a media centre it isn't. "Multiple codec support" is sketchy; it supports MPEG-2 and AVC, and the AVC support is flakey to the point of being random. There's no DivX or XVid support, MKV containers don't work and it won't even play AVIs. You can say a lot of good things about the PS3, but I couldn't tell someone it's a decent media centre while keeping a straight face.

I agree with you Kadmium on the video codec side of things....but I am sure Sony knows these flaws and with future firmware updates, who knows what can happen.

Its great that the PS3 gets this award but it is no Media centre. I class it more as a multimedia device. I'm sure Sony sell media centres with blu-ray drives that can play other formats such as DVD and CD, will have a DVD burner and possibly a blu-ray burner, probably a 500gb HDD, a decent gfx card to play games,  a lot more video codecs, much better web browsing, record live TV and much more. The price for one of those will be well over 2k but still abetter media centre.

The PS3 defiantly gets the award for best console and best multimedia player in my opinion.
