It has been a long time since the North American market has seen a Official PlayStation Magazine. All that is about to change as Future will now take the helm as the publishers of the Official PlayStation Magazine in America.
The first issue will be a Holiday 2007 edition which is slated to hit the news stand in late November. The initial circulation will be around 300,000 copies with 13 issues to be published annually.
PlayStation: The Official Magazine will boast news, previews, reviews, interviews, and other content covering the PlayStation brands for the North American territory. All this is made possible because of the magazine’s exclusive connection with Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA). Anyone who remembers Rob Smith from PSM, an independent, unofficial PlayStation magazine, may be glad to hear that he will now be taking the seat as the Editor-In-Chief of the new mag.
"Future US has a strong heritage delivering cutting-edge insight into the industry, and we are looking forward to a long standing relationship to deliver unrivaled exclusive content to PlayStation fans," says senior VP of Marketing and PlayStation Network, SCEA, Peter Dille. "We're very excited to be working with a group that is nearly as passionate about our brand as we are ourselves and we look forward to working with Future on many innovative ideas they have to create a best in class enthusiast publication."
Furthermore, publishing director at Future US, Simon Whitcombe adds, “We are enormously pleased to be selected to publish the Official title for one of the world's great entertainment brands. Future's international heritage is as a PlayStation publisher. PSM sold more than 40 million copies over its lifetime and we have published the Official PlayStation Magazine in the UK since 1995. We're honored that SCEA recognizes the excellence and experience that we can bring to the license and to PlayStation fans all over the world."
The importance of gaming magazines has seen a huge decline in recent years as more and more consumers turn to the internet for the latest news, reviews, previews and more. Let's hope this revival of Official PlayStation Magazine brings something fresh to the table.

Hrm, I don't know. I mean I like game mags for casual reading but 9 times out of 10 they don't tell me anything that I don't already know...by like a month.

I still buy most of the PS3 mags out (apart from PSW...that blows)...but i buy them for the casual reading and the entertainment value, most of the time the news is kida old as they're written months in advance...having said that I still think the the OPM should offer to magazines...one with and one without the demo disc cos all the demos are on the PSN so no point in the disc...

@ MMDS.
Yes, he is. And an official dirt bag bastard. Ever since he became a part of PSM te mag has lost all interest to me. They even started to promote Halo Merch in the mag.

Good. I'm pretty much sick of the massive Xbox articles that EGM publishes every damn month. I don't need half my damn magazine filled with a Halo 3 article about info I already know. I love the articles but when was the last time a PS game got a 20 page section?

Rob Smith is the reason why I won’t be renewing my subscription to PSM, I’m glad he will be leaving but disappointed he’s coming to the new PS magazine. He’s nothing but a wolf in sheep’s clothes. Ever since he joined PSM, the magazine has gone down hill. From as what previous people have mentioned, Halo adds, low scores on great PS3 games (War Hawk only got a 6.5 out of 10, Lair a 5 out of 10).

Yay, another avenue Mr. Smith can take to smear the PS3 on its own turf. C'mon, why on earth is this guy editor-in-chief of anything PS3 related? Are these people on a vendetta? Did no one up at the top bother to read the stuff that's been put out in PSM since he took the helm? Yeesh...
What's next? "Bill Gates to take over PSM as a contributor?" Maybe they'd be happy to give him the editor-in-chief title...after all, "he must have had a change of heart." Just like Mr. Smith... *snicker*
