Sony Computer Entertainment America is to introduce a new PlayStation 2 SKU across the US in early 2008, according to reports from MCV.
Due out some time in the New Year, the new model will retail for just USD 99, and includes its own built-in power supply.
It is currently unknown whether or not the new ‘compact’ version will hit European territories, though it is estimated that retailers will sell the system for as low as GBP 75, possibly less.
Stay tuned for more information as it breaks.

Why should they? PS2 was the most successful console ever created - it sold over 120 million times. And they will support it throughout another 3 or 4 years so it reaches its 10-year-Lifespan just like the PS3 will. They would never be so dumb and stop making and selling the PS2 cuz it is profitable right now unlike the PS3. Think about it!

I understand the lower the better theory when it comes to electronics, but c'mon 75GBP?Such a low price could possibly give the impression that it ain't good enough.

Maybe the new one is cheaper to make?
Either way, this is a good thing, especially since the ps3 bc is pretty bad. As for it being too cheap and looking like poor electronics? I'd say it's built a solid enough reputation in the last 7 years to be safe lol

There'd be no reason to make a new PS2...unless Sony is cooking something up for us. Either way I want one in case my PS2 breaks down or to mod my old PS2.

@Damodoomer: Every PS2 and PS1 game I can find works in my PS3. I tried all my friends to show them it had true BC and my 60GB does.

On the one hand, I think Sony should stop making them, because every PS2 sold is a customer that did not buy a Ps3. So surface logic would think that Sony is shooting themselves in the foot by still having this thing around. BUT, this machine actually brings in revenue, unlike the ps3 which is, last time I heard, losing money on every sell. So that gives the gaming division at Sony a little bit of funding to improve the PS3, which is always good. And for some reason, I dont think that the PS2 will die as long as the Wii is around. There are a lot of games that are made for the Wii and get ported to PS2 because of the similarity in graphical power. Codemaster's Heatseeker is one recent example off the top of my head

I don't get this. ? Wouldn't including the power supply unit in the console make it bigger than the current slim? And why put it back. I dug it not being in the console.
However it would be sweet if they had new firmware that would make the PS2 a bit more HD friendly.

Yay, the ugly bulky Power Supply is gone, but then again what was wrong with the Fat PS2? Have you seen the monster that XboX comes with ? LOL
What Sony really should be doing is releasing a new improved Fat PS2 that supports SATA2 HDs, a nice MP3 player inbuilt and a replacement for that ugly on screen playback control. Maybe an Extra 2 USB, for Linux dabblers.
And most of all, it needs a severe upgrade for those Memory Cards. 64mb or even 128mb still isnt enough, we need GB's !, how about a Memory Card with a SD Slot in it supporting 4gb - PERFECT !
Oh and i dub it..... The PS2.5 :P
