Gaming Industry in need for new IPs, says Ubisoft

Let’s face it; today’s society is a realm of trends. Whether it is music, movies, or fashion, everything is centered on a core theorem. Even the gaming industry finds itself wrapped in particular trends, at least that is what Rob Cooper, the head of Ubisoft UK. When talking about Assassin’s Creed, Cooper had this to say:
“I think the success worldwide of Assassin's Creed absolutely proves that new IP can live and prosper within the sequel and licensed based competition," said, Cooper. "The industry is crying out for new and compelling content and we're delighted that AC has lived up to its expectations."
Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, and Gran Turismo, all great exclusive titles coming to the PlayStation 3, but they are indeed sequel based IPs. On the other side of the spectrum, there are games like Little Big Planet, Heavenly Sword, and Uncharted add depth to the PS3 lineup, but more importantly they are new IPs that gives the consumer fresh experiences. That is until the game becomes big and we get an Uncharted 2 and Heavenly Sword 2. Either way, it is always good for the industry to shoot out new IPs from time to time; only if they were more.

the problem is that games in shops AND to actually make the things is so expensive that unless you're ubisoft/sony/nintendo/microsoft/ea then u cant afford to make a fresh IP that gamers may not buy! even if its great a-la assassin's creed, its only cos its ubisoft and they threw millions advertising it, that the gaming public trusted them and bought it!

FinalFantasy is a sequel-based IP ? LOL LOL
I bet Rob Cooper made that statement after playing too much HaloX and HL2:EpisodeX, (games that start with "this is the last one, we promise" and end with "haha gotcha, there'll be a sequel, where you'll see the conclusion" )
or any other "Milking the cow dry" game. (EA, I'm looking at you)

dont agree, when it comes to gamin yea its cool to have new ip's from time to time but in movies, 1 movie can make u smile and either think or remember for a month or so, series on the other hand becomes part of your day and life and you start to become part of that universe b/c of how it builds up, fps need new ip's thats true tho they are just shooting their stories are not that long or deep and its all about online and thats what should change but rpg i like how the story builds up and how u feel part of that universe when it goes on, rpg can have hole story covered in 1 game but the universe can be so big that it needs more capacity, assasins creed isnt a game that needs all that much story, at some point he has killed 1k and there is probably no assassin that have killed that much in history of man kind. new ips are cool as long as they stay over longer period of time and not just new ip every year, its cool to have twist in the story and if new ip's come all the time we will loose lots of exitement and we wont even get to know the universe that much.

@Utildeath89 I agree completely, rpg's are only truly amazing when the story is up to caliber. Gameplay factors only feature after the story for me. btw there are some fps's which have incorporated a decent story. for me that is a major faxctor when buying games.
more generally, final fantasy 13 is NOT a sequal. its a running franchise which with every seires e.g. 7,8 etc. they create a new universe in which the story is set. MGS i guess is more of a sequal series. does GT have a story?

Definitely agree with this, this year has been dominated literally by fps which is not bad but we do need variety. Its games like assassin's that redirects resources into innovative gameplay and make sure we don't see an overflow of run-of-mill sequels each year.

Sony is produceing quite a few new IPs by themselves. Between the games already released like Lair, HS, Uncharted, anf folklore as well as the upcoming Eight Days, InFamous, and some we havent even heard about yet, they're certainly putting forth more of an effort than M$.

Okay? Thanks for sharing this with us? You are correct: when a second game comes out, the original IP is not the only game of it's kind...
and @vfitz22
THANK YOU: Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII have absolutely nothing to do with the other Final Fantasys. In terms of gameplay AND storyline. So if the gameplay is different...and the story is different...I would guess...it's a new experience? lol
These guys need to think about what they are saying before they speak.

Sony's New IP's
Resistance: Fall of Man
Motorstorm
Warhawk
Heavenly Sword
Uncharted: Drakes Fortune
Lair (for better or worse)
Folklore
Eye of Judgment
Those are off the top of my head, there probably are more I missed. Sony has plenty of new IP's rolling out.
