Capcom's Monster Hunter series is now on top of the list of Japan's most popular games. The company announced today that the second title in the Monster Hunter franchise, Monster Hunter Freedom 2 on the PSP, has sold over 1.5 million copies in the region, becoming the first to do so for the handheld system.

On top of the financial success the game has seen, it received the “Excellence Prize” in the Entertainment Division of the Japan Media Arts Festival out of 2,091 pieces of media art.

The “Monster Hunter” series is a hunting action game centered on epic battles with giant monsters in the grandeur of the great outdoors. Since the release of the first Monster Hunter title in 2004 for the PlayStation 2, the series has sold a total of 4.8 million units (as of November 30, 2007) and is one of our most valued titles.

“Monster Hunter Freedom 2″ was released in February, 2007 for the PSP, with a focus on co-operative play, which has been hardily supported by youths of all ages across the country.

March 13 will mark the release of the next title in the series, Monster Hunter Freedom 2G, as Capcom hopes to build on the success of the previous titles.
