Grand Theft Auto IV cost developer Rockstar Games an estimated USD 100 million making it the most expensive videogame ever created, according to the game’s Producer, Leslie Benzies.
Benzies told The Times Online that over 1000 individuals worked on the project during its three and a half year development cycle, estimating that the sandbox title cost around USD 100 to create.
Should this figure prove accurate, it would make GTA IV the most expensive title ever created, beating out SEGA’s Dreamcast title, Shenmue, which cost the company USD 70 million.
He also touched on the criticism the title has faced in the press, commenting, "You kill prostitutes. That's usually the objection.”
"There is a big fear factor here. It's the coming of the railways. It's Elvis shaking his hips. It's cars going over 25 miles an hour and making people explode."
"We've had such a beating over the past three years. If I get into a confrontation about it, once I've had my beating, I ask if they've ever played the game," he added. "Invariably they haven't."

Paragraph 2 reads,
"Benzies told The Times Online that over 1000 individuals worked on the project during its three and a half year development cycle, estimating that the sandbox title cost around USD 100 to create."
the last line should say USD 100 million to create...doesn't PSU have editors?

for a $100 million to create, this game's graphic sure ain't much to talk about. I played it for 10 hours in and still wonder how the heck this game gets 10? It still suffers from retarded bugs like characters clipping into the objects and surroundings (good programming and hit test detection too hard for rock star?). Yeah it has a very strong story telling component, but that's about it. I tried popping in back uncharted and Devil May Cry 4 to see if my Dell 2408 is busted (yeah its 1080p with HDMI) and on my Sony 46" Bravia XBR to see if it's my PS3 gone bad, but nope its the graphic just the way they did it. Imagine if this is an exclusive, the graphics would be so much better. Characters in game still suffer from the "fat fingers" design, and I have ran into so many women on the street in game with the same "face" texture, 100 million? All that money must have been spent on the writers, and not on graphics.

there's no haters, just keeping it real and not act like lemmings following what every publisher and paid game reviewers want you to say. I guess you're one of them "HALO3 ARE AWESOMEZ" dude eh?

The $100 million probably includes the money they received from Microsoft for the exclusives. Microsoft paid Rockstar games several million dollars to make sure they receive exclusive DLC, the deal probably required Rockstar to lower the resolution on the PS3 version, and for the PS3 to have a bad online experience from the start. There's never been a PS3 game to have a resolution below 720p; Not even launch games. Money - hungry Rockstar games went for the deal, and they screwed over their many, loyal Playstation users.

@11 What are you talking about haters??? You need to get off your GTA high and look at the fact.. Yes the game is good.. I love it.. But its not perfect.. Its not what it should be for all this time we waited for it.. Its clearly that R* is still incompetent when it comes to learning the PS3 platform cause here we are having numerous issues with online which seem to be only on the PS3 side.. I guess it was to hard for them to implement ingame msg for the PS3 as well, even though they had like 2000 people working on the game.. Aparently non of them seem to own a PS3.. As far as the graphic's.. I like them. The physic's are life like...Not mind blowing but good..Hopefully they will step their game up after a wk clears and they've made enough $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

People.. Take a good look @16 comment.. This is exactally what happen when you've been on the cr@ck pipe too long.. How the F am I going to use a headset when Im offline numb nut$.. Your saying its not a cell phone but that exactally what you use in the game to go online.. It would've been nice to msg your friends right from there.. Dont try and sit there and act like you havent been in the middle of a mission and a friend has sent you an online invite.. what do you do??? do you quit the mission or finish it and then find out that it was too late to accept the invite.. Its a lose, lose situation.. And why would you advise me to buy an Xbox.. Im talking about ingame msg for this game in particular not the system as a whole..

I don't have GTA4 yet, but I'll be getting it tommorrow and from what I've heard, I am beginning to think that it didn't really live up to the hype.
It's just a shame that GTA4 got a Freaking 10/10 by most reviewers with all of the bugs it has in the game. If the reviewers were looking at a PS3 exclusive game like Uncharted or something with all of those stupid bugs and were reviewing it, it would have gotten a score like 7/10 or 7.5/10. I know one thing for sure, if GTA4 got a 10/10, those dumb reviewers had better give Metal Gear Solid 4 nothing under a 9.0/10 because Kojima doesn't release crap, and Metal Gear Solid 4 will be a better game even if it wont break sale records. The only reason why GTA4 got a 10/10 is because of the hype and excitement for the game. Those reviewers need to wake up and smell the roses because GTA4 shouldn't have got a 10/10.
And what's up with GTA4 running at 640p on the PS3 version? That's just BULL CRAP Rockstar! Shame on you Rockstar. GTA4 should have been a PS3 exclusive and it wouldn't be having all of the issues. But either way, Rockstar has already stated that if Microsoft wants GTA5 on the 360, they had better do something about disc space. I hope that GTA5 does end up being a PS3 exclusive because it should be. 7th gen console games don't need to be put on a tiny little DVD, they need Blu-Ray. The Xbox 360 is just holding back PS3 multiplatform games and it's just a shame.
