Sony: Home focused on games, not a social network

During the Develop in Brighton conference, SCEE's Darren Cairns and Liam Wickham reiterated the purpose of PlayStation Home, chiefly how its intentions are focused on providing a 3D representation of the PlayStation community.

"Home is not a social network - it's focused on games," said Cairns and Wickham. "It's a visual representation of the PlayStation community."

With the heart of Home being a system for users to meet friends and create parties to launch into games, Sony wants people to differentiate Home from social networking "games" like Second Life. Sure, the options to create and customize a 3D avatar or use your interior design skills to pimp out your pad are present, but the main focus is to be on games.

makes perfect sense, it's obvious they were listening to a lot of people complain about how it's like second life which in a sense it is.  However, it was something they didn't really need to say.  Most of us with common sense know that its focus is for gaming regardless of the other options it gives.

Isn't a "community" a "social network"? This makes absolutely no dhamned sense whatsoever. Home IS a social network BASED on games. They need to quit saying stupid things.

When they say "social Network" they're talking about things like Second life or Myspace where you spend more time in it doing things and meeting people than playing games. Sure you can meet new people in home but it's not about meeting them and staying in there the whole time, they want it to be a platform for supporting the games, not a game itself.

"Home is not a social network - it's focused on games," said Cairns and Wickham. "It's a visual representation of the PlayStation community."

PlayStation community - A social group that each partakes in the playing of PlayStation.
Home - An application released by Sony that networks each user ina virtual world.

idk what it is if its not a social network. Couldn't they have said we're not second life? I think that would have been more clear.

Does anyone else recognize that this is a MAJOR philosophy shift?  It's not social now?  Home was supposed to be the 2nd Life/Myspace/Youtube of the console video gaming world (said Stringer in the 2007 unveiling).  Translation:  "We can't get this thing to morph into anything interesting like we hoped, so we'll just make it about games since you can never really go wrong with that."  In all honesty, that's probably a good thing.  Most westerners are disagreeable online, and a community application would have just brought out the freaks.  This site seems to be the exception.  I like the people that tend to post here on PSU.

psn id: gingo... i think sony have finally saw sense and realised that people want to use home for getting into games with their friends and not for walking about a virtual space all day looking at trailers on the wall

The Focus.... people here seemed to be lost about that. Home is region locked and chances are you won't see people outside of your state.

What the means is the focus is not on being social just for the sake of  being social. It has a purpose. You are meant to use home maily as an interface for gaming related events. Whether it is metting new people to play a game with, being bombarded by gaming and movie related ads, getting together with a clan to plan to use in another game. or just  actually play competatively. Sure there is freedom to do other things but home has turned out to be what level headed people believe it to be. A jumping of point for games.

Second Life is a title which only point is to be social. Home is for gaming with a few social elements but he is describing overall focus.

I'm really tired of hearing about what home is and isn't. Because everybody will have there on look at home and use it for different things. Its best to just release it now, I know if something goes wrong then everybody is going to say they should have waited. But this is crazy. I just look at the first trailer last night and it looked like it was ready then. here we are about to go into 2009 when it will be out (maybe) because the last post from the dude saying " We will hold off on releasing home as long as its great. Now, to me that sound like another delay. Give more detail close to the release dated. they sould not be talking to other people about it, they should be working on it.

Ok, Its a "Community" not a "Social Network".  But how can you have a Community without Social interaction, thats what make a Community.
