Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has announced that the company shifted 3.6 million PlayStation 3 consoles throughout the U.S. in 2008, representing a year-on-year growth of 40 percent.

Speaking in light of NPD figures for the month of December 2008, the platform holder observed “continued momentum” for the PlayStation brand, with software sales in particular increasing a mammoth 116 percent.

“PS3 also generated one of its strongest months in software unit sales in the U.S., with almost 6 million units sold in December. For the calendar year, PS3 software unit sales increased 116%,” said the company.

Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing and PlayStation Network for SCEA, added: “The PlayStation brand has had a solid calendar year with total PS3 hardware sales up 40% and total PS3 software sales up 115%.”

“We remain confident in our momentum into 2009 as we continue to deliver to our consumers the best entertainment content and technology out there,” adding, “And we delivered on that promise this past year with one of the best software line-ups in the industry, a dramatically expanded PlayStation Network with the launch of the video delivery service and the beta of PlayStation Home, as well as extended hardware offerings with the PSP 3000 and Uncharted 160GB PS3 bundle.”

“We also hit a remarkable milestone for the PlayStation 2 platform in North America with 50 million units sold. It’s truly an amazing testament to the power and legacy of our brand.”

I have been very happy with my PS3 experience.  I do wish they would make the deal with Netflix (or Blockbuster) though.  That's pretty nice.

@4, I never use the current video thing, so I wouldn't use something like that either.  The only thing PS3 could upgrade on is make the ingame music FOR REAL this time, where it's controlled on the PS3 instead of making companies upgrade their games.  And also, add a better voice chat and voice messaging system to make communication with friends easier. I don't care about Life with Playstation, or Home.  I want features that are actually useful.

@6 unfortunately you cant have it that way because of Brand X and their pattents. the way sony has implemented these features is the only way they can without ending up in another lawsuit for ripping off someone elses technology, and also simply because the hardware wasnt built to do some of the things you're demanding.

It's quite obvious why Sales are up.

    It's Xmas....

Games for all consoles are now being discounted to well below HALF price ar various stores. ( Too HIghly priced in the first place I might add )

People all over have now experienced the Wii and Xbox at friends houses and in stores, its very very obvious the PS3 is a superior experience.

PS really is being an ar$e about several things though....

    - Where is the TVrecevier addon ?

    - Wheres the PS3 WiiMote ?

    -The PS3-Slim ?

    - Where is the lowering price ?

    - Wheres the Backwards Compatabilty people still want !!!!

Sony your still very blind to your potential customers.
