Midway has confirmed that work has already started on the next entry in the Mortal Kombat franchise.
The publisher also revealed that the latest instalment in the venerable beat ‘em up series, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, has shipped 1.8 million units globally on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 since its launch late last year.
Speaking in a press release issued today, Mortal Kombat co-founder Ed Boon commented, “Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was the result of countless hours of hard work by many people, and seeing the game surpass the million-seller plateau makes it worth all the effort.”
“We’re already hard at work on our next version of Mortal Kombat, and look forward to being able to reveal more details in the future.”

I wish they would make a new beat-em-up with some new characters/different gameplay style or fighting styles rather than using these rather dated ones, how long has tekken/sf/mortal kombat been around for ? I hope I am wrong but I think this will be just more of the same albeit with better gfx/backgrounds. Can't devs be a bit more creative rather than just re-inventing the wheel ?

they need to rework this. New characters and all. This got boring after the second game. Midway is certainly how the company operates. Bring something new to the market.

Didn't they say the last MK game was the last as we know it? I thought they said when the new consoles came (PS3/360) the series would be brand new with new characters, storyline, ect...

Yes just like "Keller" said i want to know who else have helped worked on MK3 cuz for me it was the best in the line. Bring the same team to gether and make a new MK game with fresh stories, character and background. And this time with some new real fatality, not those shi**y one in MK vs DC

I think all the leading beat em'up developers should start over with new series' or they could update their older franchises. Capcom could do a new Darkstalkers, Star Gladiator or something else I can't remember. NamcoBandai umm.. did they have anything before Tekken? Sega could bring back Virtual On (technically a fighter), Fighting Vipers umm.. anything I've missed? and I think Midway should do another Shaolin Monks

Tekken and MK are the reasons why I haven't bought another fighting game since Tekken 3 but I have played them when going over to friends. Tekken to me is outdated and so is MK but that is my opinion :P MK is always the same characters everytime they make a new MK game expect to see at least 10 of the same freakin characters on ever game they make. Same goes with Tekken, same characters and even the secret characters don't have any good thoughts or efforts put into them, they look different but have the same moves as another character.
I must say though, for the least amount of effort put into these fighting games, they sure get away with a lot of the same crap.
MK vs DC sucked I thought, I didn't like it one bit. I think they sure stop looking at sales and start looking at people's comments on their games. sure 1.8 sales but how many of those people were disappointed?

I'm really glad that fighting games are making a comeback. I remember when fighting games are what determined the fate of consoles. With SF making a huge comeback next month, and MK making yet another installment, now I'm just waiting for another Killer Instinct to be announced :)

@shader
It's not a switcheroo. Its near impossible for these companies to tell how much is actually is sold world wide...... and the most obvious point to notice is that when they ship to the retailers it counts as sold because the retailers purchase them. It is now the retailers responsibility to get rid of them.
