GHWT outsells Rock Band 2 by massive margin

The 2008 NPD software sales numbers have arrived, and with them come an official music game victor. Guitar Hero World Tour crushed Rock Band 2 at retail. While the highly praised Rock Band 2 managed to push a respectable 1.7 million units across the PS2, PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360, Guitar Hero ultimately won out. World Tour sold a whopping 3.4 million during 2008.
There are two primary factors that explain this disparity. While Rock Band 2 rolled out gradually across the four platforms (360, September 14; PS3, October 19; Wii and PS2, December 18), Guitar Hero World Tour launched simultaneously on all four on October 26. The main reason for World Tour's victory, however, is purely brand name. Even though Neversoft, not Harmonix, developed World Tour, the Guitar Hero name has become synonymous with music games, and part of mainstream culture. Average Joe doesn't know that Harmonix created Guitar Hero 1 in 2 -- in fact, Average Joe doesn't know who Harmonix is at all.

Well I know a lot of people who would have bought RB2 for PS3 if it was out in Europe yet, but haven't and no longer plan to thanks to the disgusting way HMX have treated Europeans - RB1 releasing over here when RB2 does in USA, no patch to make GHWT drums work on RB1 - did anyone expect anything else to happen.....

That's sad that people ran out in droves to buy the inferior ripoff of Rock Band. Even Forbes.com called rockband a ripoff of Guitar hero even though it's World tour that's really ripping off RockBand! I have no argument about people enjoying GHWT but I hate seeing people buy the worst of two products.
On the bright side maybe this will get HMX to start releasing their titles in the UK at the same time from now on instead of waiting 6 months and letting GH hog the territory.

I liked the hardware of GT:WT better. especially the drums. those 5 pads plus the kick did it for me. the guitar is more solid too IMO

Undeserved...as an owner of both, Rock Band 2 is definitely the better game in most respects, but oh well, the masses don't know anything but the name "Guitar Hero." I would be interested in seeing what the downloadable content figures come out to because I have a feeling Rock Band dominates on that front.

If Rock Band 2 was released in Europe for PS3 & Wii I think it could've sold better than that trash

Actually, i think its because World Tour exists on every platform it can get its grubby mits on, while Rock Band caters really only to the main 3 consoles.
But on that note, despite 3.4m World Tour sales, ive NEVER seen one playing it, except for one dude i know who rented it for free to see what it was like, and then strangely enough went right back to Rock Band 2.
Also why wouldn't Rock Band 2 sell more? Probably because its too similar to Rock Band 1, in fact you could call RB2, just RB1.5, and most people dont see a reason to upgrade when the DLC is also RB1 compatable.
So id say you could combine RB1 sales and RB2 sales and youd get a figure that shoudl trump World Tour. If it doesn't, then whatever, i can still agree to your brand recognition theory hehe
