MTV has crazy track expectations for Rock Band

Last year, Harmonix set a goal of releasing 500 total tracks to the Rock Band community by the end of 2008. By the end of the year, the rhythm genre innovators had met that goal and then some. Now, Harmonix and MTV are proclaiming that they plan to release as many as 5,000 total tracks for Rock Band by the end of 2009. While this expectation seems like crazy talk, the company certainly has the licenses to pull it off.
In case you're trying to do the math, that works out to roughly 90 songs per week. However, with how Steve Schnur describes his vision of the industry, it's quite possible they may start releasing tracks on a daily basis.
"What comes with the success of 'Rock Band' and 'Guitar Hero' is the microscopic view of what the potential of music in this medium can be," said Steve Schnur, worldwide executive of music and marketing for "Rock Band" distributor Electronic Arts.
"There are other titles that continue to be not just successful, but outsell these games by wide margins," Schnur said. "So the question isn't, What's the next 'Rock Band'? The question is, When can we take the model of a 24/7, day-by-day musical relationship with not only music games, but with every game? I believe this is the year that's going to happen."
Whether Harmonix and MTV can pull this off is a long way from being seen, but we're quite anxious to see them attempt it.

People still keep up with these titles? Honestly, I wouldn't be able to just keep buying more music games like this.
Bring something new to the table please, a la DDR.

I think it would be overkill. I really doubt it would be worth it, people would get overloaded with so many songs and MIGHT even hurt the game

No. you know what would hurt the genre? releaseing half a dozen incremental versions of the same game in a single year and expecting people to pay full price for it everytime while making the DLC for each one in compatible with the next version. ....Oh hey look, it's Guitar Hero! was just I talking about you?
I really hope that RB2 would at least add some more costuming options because all these songs are building up ridiculous amounts of money that I cant use on anything anymore. Add some new animations for the performances and such, I love the game but they've got to give you a bit more than just the music. Speaking of which to release songs daily as they're suggesting it might actually force them to dig even deeper into the mix for songs. I mean Imagine giving even more foreign music options, Spanish, German, Japanese, they all have rock music and bands that fit the Guitar, bass, drumer and vox set up even if the vocals are a little more difficult for enlgish speakers it opens the game up tot he rest of the world.

It's now being reported that this was a misquote by Billboard from an Ars Technica interview of Harmonix President Alex Rigopulos at CES this year.
"That said, one of the great promises of the catalog moving forward, as the catalog expands from 500 songs to 5,000 songs or whatever in the coming years, is that we're going to be less constrained from a genre standpoint, and I think you will see us starting to branch out into... whether it's country or R&B and jazz or funk, or things of that sort. With the critical mass of the "rock" core covered, of course we'll keep expanding it, but the critical mass is covered, so now we can start to branch off in ways that haven't made sense in the past but will make sense moving forward."

love the idea...assuming it actually gets executed.
With each PSN update, the only 2 things i check are 1-demos, and 2-New song downloads.
If they update daily then, wow, that will be great! So go for it! Maybe this way they wond dissappoint half the time with the song selections...

I've been playing these games since the very first guitar hero... and like a lot of you i've worked my way up to expert on pretty much all the offered instruments. I don't say that to brag but you would think that by now Harmonix would recognize that there is a ginormous chunk of its fanbase that can nail most of the songs they're putting out easy. I've waited and waited for my favorite genre of music to come around... plain and simply... im a metal head, but all they've given me is some All That Remains. Where's August Burns Red, Bullet For My Valentine, As I Lay Dying, or maybe some Parkway Drive? I know I can't possibly be the only one out here waiting for these guys. With that said... bring on the music. If they can actually pull it off then maybe... just maybe... we wont all be forced to play radio music to death.
(aaaaaaand... for the record: before anyone pulls the "play a real instrument if you want to play these songs" ... I do. I'm a guitarist for a metal band, can play the drums, sing, and even dabble a bit with the keyboard. So on behalf of all the musicians out there that love these games anyway... STFU)
