Sony has revealed that global PlayStation 3 sales have eclipsed the 21 million mark.
The announcement comes following the company’s plans to launch hardware across Latin America. According to the platform holder, life-to-date sales figures for the console now stand at approximately 21.3 million units.
In addition, the firm also confirmed that PlayStation Network has now achieved 17 million registered accounts, though neglected to specify whether or not this included duplicate accounts and/or excluded PSP accounts, and those activated on the PSN website.
With an array of PS3-exclusives arriving this year, we expect 2009 to prove a prosperous year for the Japanese electronics giant. Stick around on PSU for more info as we get it.

21 Million PS3 and 28 Million 360's.
I am sure that at least 20% of the 360's are re-purchases to replaced melted motherboards.

with Killzone 2, inFamous, Uncharted 2, God of War 3, Heavy Rain, that new Ratchet and Clank game, that exclusive gears style shooter by tecmo? MLB, (Yazuka 3, White Knight Chronicles that will hopefully come to NA) and more. its gonna be a great year for PS3 AND w/e TEAM ICO are making
360 however, has the vibrant Halo Wars, Halo osdt, Ninja Blade? and Star Ocean, and some expansions in the form of DLC...Fable DLC? gears maps...
ill also say what 360 wont have exclusively...Mass Effect 2, Lost Planet 2, Dead Rising 2, all multiplatform now

@1 the manager of our eb games store here in australia said lots of people come in all the time and buy xbox arcades because their main xbox has died. they dont care about throwing down the $300 on it so what you're saying is correct.

"duplicate accounts and/or excluded PSP accounts, and those activated on the PSN website." I don't understand why this keeps getting brought up. Nobody asks if Microsoft's numbers include PC Live accounts, duplicates, accounts only used for forum contribution, original Xbox accounts etc etc.

I'd say at lease 30% are fried Xbot units. All 3 of my friends that had them fried them at lease once!
What a year for the ps3 09 will be the year of DOMINATION. Out exclusive list shows that!

the good thing about having one good year is that it will wake the other idiot devs out there ~looks at square~ and hopefully they'll go 'maybe we were wrong to judge the ps3 to early'

That's really good for a console that is double the price of its competitors. If the PS3 would have launched the same time as the 360, it would be pretty damn close, like thousand units difference.
And people say the PS3 is doomed. Then the 360 is closed to being doomed cause they are pretty close numbers. The PS3 is alot more money and the PS3 is still selling close to the same number of units, so if the PS3 lowers in price, then the PS3 would crush it in sales, right??

it doesnt need a sales cut because from what ive read it would hurt more than help. it might 'sell' more but they may not make much money. i think if they game bundle they'll be fine.

@5, yes just ONE of those numbers. Not 2 or 3 of them, lol.
@11, It sounds bad when you put it like that "all 3 of my friends". Like that's all the friends you have. I get what you're saying though. I've known a lot of people that have had to turn in their 360s.

Well actually from the 10 friends i have with an xbox360, every single xbox has died by now. Mine died about 8months ago, never going to buy one again. MS didnt delivered a quality product so they will not see my money for quite a long time and this will carry on to the other system when they release it.

Yeah I have a few stupid friends who have had a 360 die on them and when it wasn't covered by warranty they went out and bought another. If hardware is crap you don't keep buying more of it, but they insist they can't live without Live (better patent that before MS does). Also MS has a year lead on the PS3 and no real great games coming out this year. I have noticed a lot of PS3 software is just sold out and everyone is buying PS3s now. So congrats Sony.

the difference is suprising given the fact that the 360 had such a head start. the gap will get smaller over 09. it will be real interesting to see what happens as the developers catch up to the ps3 technology over the next year or so. we are just now seeing evidence of this happening via games like killzone 2 and resistance. the real test will be now that the graphics war is close will the next front be the games expanding in size? massive action game (if all goes as planned) could not happen on the 360 and should end any argument as to possibilities in that field.

Three healthy consoles is a win for all gamers. Stiff competition will keep both Sony and MS on their toes and all us gamers will reap the benefits.

I'm an Xbox fan and I love Halo Wars so there. I love how anytime some average news comes out about PS3 that it turns into the only reason it sells well is because people have to replace it. Well I've had my 360 since launch day and I have yet to have a problem. My PS3 has been great as well.
At least the 360 didn't do away with backwards compatiblity.
Xbox 360 = Best Console
PS3 = Best Blu-ray Player
Wii = Best console to play with Grandma -

Down by 7 million units. Not bad. Especially when you look at the fact that the 360 had a year head start on the PS3 and the big exclusives 360 has had over the last couple years. Halo 3, Gears 2 etc. Now it's the PS3 time to shine in 2009, with exclusives like God Of War 3, MAG, Heavy Rain, and Uncharted 2.

Xbox 360 = Best Console
PS3 = Best Blu-ray Player
Wii = Best console to play with Grandma"i'll agree that most people have said halo wars is incredible.
but the backwards compatibility is so dull with 360. half the games don't work because there is no update for them, and you have to use your precious harddrive space just to play them? ehm, no thanks! Ps3 did away with it to save them a nickel, most people aren't even bothered, since ps2's are like... 25-50$ at any used hardware store. then theres lucky 10million that got the backwards compatible ones. not to mention i'm sure sony will come around sooner or later, if not, not biggy really. only sad thing is, ps2 game quality>>>>xbox game quality.
oh and i call you out on you having your 360 since launch and it still being the same one. please screenshot your serial number and your reciept for proof, please. microsoft announced that they were aware there systems were full of fail, all of them, and even said it's only a matter of time until they die. so provided your telling the truth, i call you one of the unlucky ones who will have there 360 after warranty is up and you'll get a rrod. =

I think M$ have totally sh@ on their customers, not only bringing out a shoddy product that has a 35% failure rate (worst electrical statistic ever), but also stopped producing games 4 the xbox. Now ok sony have stopped bc but who cares, theres 150 million ps2 's out there, play ps2 games on a ps2 4 f**k sake @ least they're still making ps2 games ay M$

yup - with exclusives so strong coming to PS and with the xbox losing its e.g. mass effect, dead rising and some halo wars game then things will only get better in my view. plus, this should put some people off xbox - not only do you have to pay for their online service but its being hacked....

im just glad that i have one of the original ps3's (the 20 gig one) that has the backwards compatibility. sure i upgraded the hard drive to a 160, but its awesome. i still have my awesome collection of ps2 games as well as original ps1 games that i still play from time to time. granted the newer ps3 games will make the old games collect dust, but it is always nice to take a small time warp! :-D

Along with being in the market for 2 years, 21 million sales seems impressive so its coming out a chance in beating my beloved Gamecube sales & the original XBOX.
