Capcom’s Masachika Kawata has admitted that development of Resident Evil 6 could take anywhere in the region of four to eight years.
Speaking to The Gadget Show, the Resident Evil 5 producer confirmed that a sixth instalment in the long running horror franchise has yet to be decided, hinting that fans may have an arduous wait on their hands.
“We haven’t decided whether we’re going to make Resident Evil 6 yet,” said Kawata “But if we do, it could take anywhere up to eight years, but hopefully only four.”
All we know so far is that Resident Evil 6 will offer a complete overhaul for the series, though quite how Capcom intends to go about this is anyone’s guess. The company previously hinted that there's a chance the zombies may make a return, though for all we know it could be something entirely different altogether.
Stay tuned.

No.1
This doesn't really make any sense, in one instance they say its not decided if there is even gonna be a No.6, and in another its rumored that zombies may make a return. Not only that but on what basis is this 4-8 years? its not based in any reality as far as i can see, its just a number plucked out of the air.

Well thats ridiculous, and ok in a way. They've said they're going to completely re-shape the series with the 6th if they make it (again), and there prob will be loads of hype with a trailer that will come out and will take years to make (like killzone 2), but 4 - 8 years is a bit much.

There is no way it would take that long, not only because of possible spin offs. Like we have seen in the past, but because there is way too much money to be lost by hesitating.

If it takes that long it will suffer the same as RE5 as not being anything new. For years we heard about RE5 but when it came along games like Uncharted, MGS4, Gears of War and KIllzone were already here and had surpassed it before it was even released. If Capcom want to make an outstanding game they should not start relaxing now, they should start making RE6 right away.

Yeah, if its gonna be an overhaul, I dont think 6 is going to be at the end of the title, imo. Secondly, I honestly believe Capcom has really shot their wad with SF4 gaining new ground with some fans not previously into fighters (me), and losing fans of the old itinerations that dont like it for some reason. RE5's dev cost must have been ridiculous, and we really dont know if its gaining Capcom any profit yet. If I were in Capcom's shoes right now, I would "rent" out the rights to another developer, and see what they come up with (spinoff), it may lead to new and fresh ideas.

LOL!!! 8 years??? DAMN you guys at capcom are full of yourselves. The most impressive technology goes to Killzone and that didn't take 8 years. Hey, maybe GG should do RE6

it shouldn't take 8 years. If it takes 8 years to do an overhaul of a game, then they should just stop making this game and stick to Street Fighter. It's already been proven quite a few times that the longer a game takes doesn't mean it's going to be great. Infact, it causes people to get overhyped the closer those games get that take damn near forever. 4 to 8 freakin years, arg. Kawata doesn't make any sense, "but if we do, it could take anywhere up to eight years, but hopefully only four."
please give Kawata the boot.
