Reporting on the eve of Sony’s mysterious PlayStation announcement tomorrow, Joystiq has got word that the platform holder will be slashing the price of PlayStation 2 in North America from $129 USD to $99 USD.

According to the article, the price cut – spotted at kmart – will be effective from April 5, though the site notes that no evidence of a PlayStation 3 price reduction was found despite numerous rumors suggesting otherwise.

Given the proximity of this development to Sony’s announcement, it's looking highly likely that Joystiq are on the mark with this one.

We’ll keep you posted.

God, I hope there's something more than this. Surely there's no point in holding a major press conference to announce a $20 price cut on a 10 year old console which could be generously described as being on it's last legs.

Finally making the PS3 affordable would be  a much more sensible option for Sony. But we'll see. After all, Sony do enjoy making suicidal marketing moves.

@3...I agree with you that it doesn't seem likely they would be holding a special press conference just to announce a $20 price drop...something just doesn't add up there

I seriously hope it's something completely unrelated to price cuts. I mean I already own PS1, PS2, PSP & PS3. I'm not planning on buying any more Sony gaming machines just yet. I hope it actually something game related.

I know it's still rumor, but what did I tell you guys in the other thread?!  THERE WILL BE NO PS3 PRICE CUTS.  Sony is committed to the "added value" model.  Again, the proof is the PSP.  If there is a price cut, it will be like some of you have already said...ALL the platforms will drop a bit.  And I do mean "a BIT".  This $100 PS3 price drop you know-nothing people keep predicting is ridiculous.

This really isn't anything to get excited over, I just have a hard time believeing that Sony hasn't improved there manufacturing costs on PS3.

My PS2 still gets regular play. I know one day it'll stop working so maybe I should buy a backup PS2 and store it until that day.

If that's the big announcement then they can keep it. I really don't care about saving an Andrew Jackson on a 9-yr old system. I want to hear about a price cut on the PS3 or a new PSP that's more iPhone and less, well, PSP. And if they're going to announce a price cut on the PS2, go big and drop it to like $75 or $80. Or if they're going to sell it for $100 at least bundle an extra controller or a game from the Greatest Hits collection. For a $20 price drop my socks will stay firmly on my feet.

A 20 dollar price drop? I hope that isn't the big announcement. What the crap is 20? The only reason I would ever buy a PS2 at this point is if something happened to my 60 gig.
