Sony has 'captured the hardcore' with PS3, says Koller

Sony’s John Koller has declared that the platform holder has successfully nailed the hardcore gamer audience with PlayStation 3, with the firm now keen on pursuing the casual user base over the next couple of years.

Speaking to VG247, Koller stated, “There’s certainly a line-up of very strong family-friendly titles that we’re looking at for PS3 in our continuing effort to appeal to that casual consumer.”

Of course, that’s not to say the firm has all but given up on hardcore fans. Far from it, Koller noted, as there’s a plethora of meaty offerings on the way including the likes of Heavy Rain and God of War III, not to mention fresh IP to boot.

“We’ve captured the hardcore. The install base we have now tells us that the hardcore’s purchased. We’re moving on now to continue to support them with a tremendous line-up of games, but also look at softer brands that maybe we had with PS2 franchises we’re bringing over to PS3, or new IP.”

Though he remained tight lipped as to what we could expect to see other than the usual suspects, Koller teased: “Think of some of the latter-half PS2 franchises.”

We’ll find out soon enough come E3 2009. Stay tuned.

Sony is doing well despite what people think. It's been on par with the 360 since release date and will only get better.

..and yes, Koller, as "hardcore" gamers - we are all six years old, and feel really important and valued when someone is dangling sweets in front of our noses.

So...They're gonna divert resources from first party titles like Uncharted 2 to go towards generally rubbish games (Most times casual games are)?

Why? Nintendo already have this market in a stranglehold and aren't giving it up any time soon, the fact that the PS3 is the most expensive means the casual gamer will always choose the wii over it, or even if they do want more serious games they'd just get a 360 as it's is a cheaper alternative to a PS3 offering to them very similar things for what they'd want.

afterall that's exactly what "Playstation" is all about - Hardcore gaming. It's the only reason I've bought it.  No doubt they've captured the hardcore gamers, the amount of casual gamers that only own the PS3 for casual games is not wort mentioning I think...

The ONLY way Sony will get some "casuals" is to lower the price. Until then, not gonna happen.

    They nailed it ,

this year, so as time progresses so will we see games that will appeal more to a different demographic and this is also a sign that the PS3 must have a lower entrance appeal to capture the attention of the 13 old gamer that has to wait every christmas for something special.
