Kitase: FFXIII isn't a JRPG

Square Enix’s Yoshinori Kitase has let slip that he isn’t quite ready to pigeonhole Final Fantasy XIII as a JRPG, claiming that the hotly anticipated title “straddles genres.”
Speaking to EDGE, Kitase commented, “There’s a trend these days to strictly categorize games as western RPGs or Japanese RPGs, but Final Fantasy is something that we don’t try to categorize as either/or.”
“For us, the game straddles genre.”
JRPG or not, we’re absolutely stoked to get our hands on this future gem, so just keep your fingers crossed for a speedy translation to the west. The game is due to hit Japanese retailers by the year’s end, so keep those eyes peeled for more info over the course of the next few months.

I can honestly say, I will not be buying this game. and I\\\'ll say that with a smile on my face... It\\\'s all changed too much. What this Versus title all about.. And a Crystal version too?!
Why can\\\'t it just be Final F****** Fantasy 13?!
I dunno...... Just not doin it for me. Graphically it\\\'s the best thing I\\\'ve ever seen, take than Michael Moore and George Lucas! But the whole... Concept. Just not feeling it. Is it futuristic? Is it prehistoric? What planet is it on? It\\\'s all these things that baffle me.. What the f*** is the story about? Who are these characters with femanine hair? IM CONFUSED .COM!

This isn't the whole article, in the full thing he says hes always thought of FF as it's own genre, so he wasn't just talking about XIII.
I don't think he knows how people in the west see FF so he just said it to make it appeal to westerners.
I've played the demo, its 100% a JRPG and it's 100% an FF game, way more like X then XII so nothing to fear.

@HalfofZero
No need to get so confused. Apparently the FFXIII and thier variations have the same mythology revolving crystals. The Ivalice alliance titles( tactics, tactics A2, Vagrant story and FFXII) take place in the same world and so does the FFVII collection.

HalfOfZero, most likely it will be about corruption, politics, etc etc, something along those lines. kind of like FF12. Now people seem to tell me it's not, but how the heck do they know it isn't, it looks like that is what it's going to be.
I really don't see the fantasy part of these games anymore. FFX was a fantasy game you could say but that was the last of it. FF12 was more about corruption and stuff like that. I just wish more games went the way of the true fantasies such as dragons, swords/shields, maces, armor. SE doesn't seem to do any of these mention, if you do get armor in the game no matter how it looks, your character will still be in their orginial cloths that they were from the start of the game. Guns, rockets, gernades, with monsters and swords. oh lets not forget that gunsword is back I think.
I wont buy this game for those things I mentioned above, I already went through this with FF8 and don't plan to do it again. SE has completely milked this franchise and quite frankly I really don't see anything special about it anymore. The reason I keep going to these articles is hoping there is going to be something special about it, nothing has been mentioned that seems awesome.
So far they have given nothing but generic answers, the questions asked were fine but the answers were very generic and meaningless. What I mean about SE milking this franchise is this: Everything they have done from FF7 and on as been somewhat similar in a way. I am NOT saying that other FF games after FF7 were identicle but After FF7 all the stories started to becoming the same. SE is so solid on their style which they have done for years, they don't give any other games effort but only the FF series. just think how amazing other SE games would be if they put in more effort into their other titles. FF is boring, it's been done time and time again, I personally don't see how the story for FF13 is going to differ from past FF games.
What's even more sad is we really don't have any other really great RPG's right now on the PS3, so this game is going to blow others out of the water. This is all basically phsycological, so of course others are going to swallow this game up. the sales will jump dramatically because of this. Don't get me wrong, the game would sell a ton regardless but it's going to be even more now which SE is favoring. No other RPG/company is even competing for a good RPG and that's in SE's favore.

eeerm how about doing some research on the story because we already have a prolouge.

Open the second spoiler tag, the only way it's political is that it mentions the word 'Government'.
The story is focused around crystals.
You may find it boring but the 3+ million people who buy this game won't
This gen has been filled with generic FPS games or games with half assed stories, MGS4 and Valkyria chronicles are the only games that stand out and this will be the another to the small list.

whilst I will always see it as a jrpg, i kinda see a point that it has it own genre. With the amount of ff games out and how they follow similar mechanics, its understandable why he would say that.
Looking forward to this game, just wish I had of ordered advent children for the demo now :(

Anybody who's watched any of the trailers already knew it isn't a JRPG. They've sold out to broaden their mainstream western appeal, which corresponds to them selling out to Microsoft. That, along with the fact that the game isn't a JRPG, is why I won't be wasting my money on it.

Seriously. This guy is out of his mind
This guy is certainly a live one. S-E is completely doomed, and yet still clinging to these delusion of survival.
I am curious as to what he says when he gives in to the inevitable

I find it hilarious that the japanese still dont understand that a JRPG is always going to be a JRPG. You choose battle commands from a menu and attack in turns, And does it around a storyline that feels uniquely japanese, that MAKES it a JRPG. You make it an action game and it's not a JRPG any more it's an Action RPG. Final Fantasy can never not be a JRPG because if it wasnt it wouldnt be Final Fantasy. Sure FF11 was a MMORPG which is probably the most different it's ever been but it was still an MMORPG that was steeped in the FF mythos. If you change it too much it might as well be something else entirely.

SE needs a better boss, better spokesman, better developers...maybe SE needs to go. Nomura should make his own dev team and buy the FF franchise and take the KH one with him. That's the only way I can see FF gaining it's pride back again.
SE this gen and half the past one = amazingly stupid
