Kitase: Xbox 360 FFXIII will not compromise PS3 version

Square Enix’s Yoshinori Kitase has reiterated that the developer is committed to offering gamers an ‘equal experience’ for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Final Fantasy XIII.

Kitase’s comments come following news that the 360 version of the eagerly anticipated RPG hadn’t entered development until after the PS3 FFXIII demo hit Japanese stores in April.

“The team is targeting to create an equal experience on both the 360 and the PS3, so there are no limitations. For example, right now we’re working on the PS3 version first, and once we’ve completed that we’ll really know how much game there will be to fit onto the Xbox 360 discs,” he told VideoGamer.com.

“So we don’t know how many discs it’ll be housed on for 360, but there won’t be a chance that we’ll compromise anything because, oh it didn’t fit in the 360 discs so we’ll have to take it out of the PS3 version, or vice versa.”

Final Fantasy XIII is due out in Japan later this year, with a North American release arriving in 2010.

Yea, but we still have to wait for our version because of the 360. So yes, it's compromising the ps3 version.

Not to mention that an equal experience will mean compromising the PlayStation's power/graphical capabilities by lowering it to that of a 360's standard - yes, Square Enix, that counts as compromising...

Doesn't matter, I don't like the game anyway.

here they go contridicting themselves again.  they say that both will be the same, then it will compromise the ps3 version.  just tell the truth please, the 360 version will hold back the PS3 version

@9: Regardless of how far the PS3 version was into development when the 360 version was announce, Square Enix cannot promise equality without compromise. Equality without compromise is an impossible claim for consoles of such unequal ability.

I'm sorry, but with all due respect to Kitase, by just using simple logic there are only a few possibilities:

    1) Both versions are created at the same time, with completely separate compiled code for differing architectures and storage formats.  This is the most costly and inefficient way to do it, so it's highly unlikely they are doing it this way from a business standpoint and it's not logistically a probability because they're creating the Japanese PS3 version first.  Result of this method would be that the PS3 version would not be gimped, assuming the PS3 development team did not consult with the 360 development team at all.  Highly unlikely

    2) The Japanese PS3 version is created first and then it's localized for the US PS3 version.  It's developed 100% for the PS3 architecture and storage capacity.  Chance:  Likely.  Result: Gimped 360 port (unless they rebuild the code to maximize the 360 architecture, which is more costly but still leaves them with a lesser quality product).

    3)  The PS3 version is created first, with the 360 limitations in mind and then the game is ported to both platforms after the U.S. localization.  Chance: Probable.  Result:  Both versions are about equal which means the PS3 version is not as good as it could have been.

As you can see, either way, it's not possible for both versions to be equal AND for the PS3 version to be as good as it possibly could have been.  They are mutually exclusive results.  If the goal is to utilize the PS3 architecture and storage to it's maximum, then the 360 port would have to be the lesser of the two.  If the goal is to create equal versions, then one or both versions will have to be sacrificed.

I'm sorry to say that, but FFXIII didn't impress me at all so far. And also you would be a fool to believe what they say.

But there are games on the horizont that look much more promising. One of them rhymes with "DEPARTED".

The xbox 360 version won't affect the playstation 3 version, but the game will offer an equal experience for both versions? A bit of a contradiction there. Maybe he's saying this in terms of graphics?

I definately hope kitase will make a remake of final fantasy VII playstation 3 exclusive so that we won't have to hear square enix's rubbish again.

I'll get the game, but I honestly dont believe him 100%, as long as VERSUS XIII stays exclusive and also pushes the PS3's power then I dont mind.

What the heck, SE has LIED yet again.  They just said a few months ago they were working on the 360 version.  Now they say they didn't start the 360 version until the PS3 demo hit.   Whatever, SE has turned into this lying bogus company and frankly when they say they are offering gamers and equal experience, they just compromised what they said they weren't doing.

SE, you guys are starting to stick out as a bunch of [you know whats].

This article didn´t make much sense to me...to be honest  =). But this doesnt bother me, as long as the game will be enjoyable (hopefully on both consoles).

Simultaneous release for N/A E.U equals compromise.
“So we don’t know how many discs it’ll be housed on for 360, but there won’t be a chance that we’ll compromise anything because, oh it didn’t fit in the 360 discs so we’ll have to take it out of the PS3 version, or vice versa.”
This says it all.  They are going to make sure that they don't have to cut anything by ensuring that the game will run on the 360.  If they really were "maxing out" the PS3, it would not run on the 360.  It is that simple.

is it just me that reads this announcement to mean that the PS3 game will be awesome on a single BD, THEN they have to work out how to make it good on 360 across however many DVD's that will take to fit it all in? i don't see it as a PS3 downgrade, more of a struggle to equal it on 360 when the time comes to port it ! that's how it sounds to me, so stop the hate and look forward to what will be an awesome game, and on PS3 first !

    At 20,

some people are angry at the xbox 360 port because 1. the game could've sold more playstation 3s if it stayed exclusive, 2. playstation 3 owners would have to wait longer for the game's release, and 3. people are concerned with the overall quality of the game because of the xbox 360 version.
