Take-Two hopeful that BioShock 2 will outperform original

Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick has said he is hopeful that upcoming sequel BioShock 2 will pack more of a punch at retail than its predecessor as a result of brand awareness.

Speaking to VentureBeat, Zelnick confessed that he would have liked to have seen the original BioShock sell in the region of five million units globally, despite the FPS having been met with overwhelming praise from gaming critics upon release.

“We announced it sold around 3 million units,” he stated. “I’d like to see a title like that sell 5 million units. That would make the difference for us. If you have four or five titles that are significantly successful, that will meaningfully change our profitability.”

“BioShock got a lot of attention. It’s brand is huge. It won lots of awards. But it wasn’t as huge as a seller. I’m hopeful that BioShock 2 will benefit from the brand awareness, where people will play it even if they didn’t play the original.”

The executive also revealed that Take-Two now has 16 titles in its catalogue with sales in excess of one million copies.

BioShock 2 is due out on PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360 later this year.

Well, I still haven't played the actual game, but the demo really impressed me, although it was a bit limited. I intend to get BioShock as soon as I can, and I'm already looking forward to the sequel. Microsoft are screwed now that it's gone multiplatform, because I was persuaded to buy an Xbox 360 just for that game. Now that it's not exclusive, they have nothing that, in my opinion, outdoes anything on the PlayStation 3, and Microsoft just lost a potential customer!

Hopefully the PS3 version wont be graphically inferior to the 360 version like the first one was. That one looked horrible on PS3 but amazing on 360. Kind of like Ghostbusters.

What makes it more funny is that an xbox fanboy signs up to a playstation site to air his 360 opinions. quite sad really.

I can't get motivated to complete the first one. I bought it, expecting it to be an amazing game and I wasn't let down, it is superb. I just can't get into it. Guess I'll have to finish it sometime soon if I plan on buying number 2.

@7 Oh you pesky little troll :) PS3 version outperformed the 360 one in the gametrailers video during the water scene. If the FULL RGB setting was used, they would look much closer, if not even. Keep your garbage to yourself. Unless you're really such a pathetic little XBUTT.

    At 7,

Actually, the playstation 3 version of bioshock is graphically superior to the xbox 360 version. The playstation 3 version can output 1080p native.

Bioshock is easily one of the better titles of this generation. Good storytelling, technically solid and fun to play. What else can you ask for?

    All gameplay is repetitive.

No **** it will beat the original in sales. It's multplatform and the first was one of the best games of the generation.
