Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2's big changes

PlayStation Universe was in London recently for the Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 press conference, and we’ve returned with some excellent info. Sigma 2 is a change of direction for the Ninja Gaiden series in many ways, but most of those changes seem positive thus far.
Where to start? The first news, which you may already know, is that the game is coming this fall. Next month we’ll get a solid release date.
Yosuke Hayashi, producer at Team Ninja, took most questions through a translator and played a demo of the game. He was pretty evasive about why the PS3 was chosen to be the exclusive platform, but he did say that development was driven more by the PS3 fanbase than PS3 hardware.
Some differences besides the release time:
--There are two new playable female characters, Momiji and Ayane. They will have their own plotlines that intersect with Ryu's, and some levels will belong to them only. Some levels will have cooperative play with these characters, but not all of them.
--This one will not be so violent and gory. The new approach is to make the game more “cool.” Hayashi noted there are plenty of violent video games and he doesn’t wish to emulate that; he’d like to do something different this time.
--Someone asked about whether the camera had been improved. Hayashi said the it has “already received a great deal of praise” and that the camera and difficulty were the two primary concerns. We got the opportunity to try out the demo for ourselves and have to agree—the camera is much more responsive to sudden changes than in the previous Ninja Gaiden games.
--DLC is not currently in the works, but Hayashi noted he'd consider it if they find there is enough demand for it.
--Speaking of challenge, we’re not sure how much that has actually changed. The first question was “Ninja Gaiden traditionally features an extremely high difficulty level. Has anything been changed in NGS2 to tweak the experience for the casual gamer?” The somewhat evasive answer: “The game is designed for people who enjoy action and that it is purposely designed to challenge.” Now, Hayashi played the game himself and he almost died twice on the boss, having to use two full life potions. He was hit many, many times. Maybe it will be somewhat easier, but one thing’s for sure: the old challenge is still alive and at least an option, if not required.
Now that you've heard all about it, why don't you take the opportunity to see it, too.

I'm glad to hear they're cutting down on the gore. It looked way over the top on the 360. Better going for the stylish look.

They are toneing down the GORE WTF ... bah this will be dull and uninteresting. It's a bit like having a MGS game but with the action toned down and who would buy that if that were to be the case???

I think what he's saying is it's just not going to be as bad as the 36* version. There's no need to over do the gore any more than they did in the previous game. The developers are clearly trying to move away from what Itagaki had pushed them into.
I have no doubt there'll be blood and beheadings, it's a game about ninjas for pete's sake.

NG is a bit too hard sometimes. They should scale that back. Though, I finished the games a few times over.

I tried Ninja Gaiden 2 on a friend's 360. I had a positive impression on the gore. It was really fun. And having played Ninja Gaiden Sigma on PS3 some time later, it was kind of disappointing regarding the lack of gore in Sigma. I was really hoping that they'd transmit the gore from NG2 to the PS3 version.
Mark me disappointed.

Taking out gore... that's most retarded thing I've heard. Won't be buying this anyways. I'm sure its a good game but if your playing with swords then I want to see guts, heads, arms, and legs chopped off. I like realism.

I swear to god, the people whining about gore taken out really do sound like children. I wouldn't doubt if most of the "this is retarded, no gore"? post were by 13 to 15 year olds.
If gore makes a game for you then you are sure missing out on a lot of cool games. But whatever, to each their own. I play a game for what it is, not what it should be. No wonder we have so many disappointed gamers around these forums.

Why is everybody whining about gore?
He said "it won't be so violent and gory." That doesn't mean they are talking ALL of the gore out, it just means when you cut off an enemies head there won't be 100 gallons of blood spilling out, it will look more realistic and "cool" since the view of the flying limbs won't be obscured by all that blood on the screen. Seriously people, if your going to cry over the gore being toned down you can twiddle your thumbs until GoW comes out instead of playing this.

@ 19 I completly agree
I don't mind the change at all because it's the changes that meke it OUR game for the PS3, even though I do think that having gore in the game would be nice I except and welcome the change, but I believe that for Hayashi san to gain more support in the audience, he should make it optional to have blood and gore in the game or make it an unlockable, so that makes the game even more fun to play cuz you'll be working towards something you want in the game, same as the difficulty and make AWESOME costumes for ALL characters

I hope psu isn't being stupid and asking developers to make games EASIER and less COMPLEX, because if you want simple games then you are a casual gamer in which case no self respecting passionate gamer should support this website seeing as it may be asking developers to produce retrogressive sequels (yes sigma is a sequel, a continuation of the 3d ninja gaiden games, even if the changes are small and amount to only a slight update), the progress in videogames obviously comes from their complexity (their depth, like everything else in life that is of value).

I'm glad that now you can adjust the difficulty, because for us not familiar with the series playing Sigma 1 was really difficult. I think they decreased the gore to attract a more younger audience (those whose parents buy the games for them) but at least it should be an option, like on other games where you can block the blood with a parental control or something

More chicks: Yay!
Less Violence: Boo!
Co-op gameplace: Meh~
Overall: Bought the first game and got bored before finishing it. Still have not heard anything to convince me I should buy the sequel.

great game series. dont think the lack of gore will detract many fans. If anything i think it will attract new people to the franchise. never played the series on PS3 but only on my friends XBOX and X360 (which he recently turned in for a PS3 cause he felt that recently the games are more appealing to spend 60$ on the PS3 instead of 360), but this may be a buy for me!

I hope this game is easier to play through. Even if it's designed for the one's seeking challenege, well the difficulty setting is for just that reason: so people can select how they wish to approach the game. I'm one of the casual gamers, and I really like this game (of course when someone esle is playing it), when I tried the demo of first sigma, I just couldn't beat the fat guy...simply couldn't. I simply gave up and deleted the game, now if they could somehow make it so it's as difficult as GOW on easy...then I would really give this game another go since I'm very much liking this one.

I own NG2 on 360 and was going to get this one too, but no gore? They should atleast make the gore an option. I mean the systems already there. I know that gore isnt going to take away from the awesome gameplay but it sure is icing on the cake.

LOL YOU MUST BE VERY LAZY OR VERY YOUNG TO DEMAND THAT MUCH SIMPLICITY
Anyway, its the casual gamers like the rabble of society that are messing it up for those of us who are actually passionate about these games. Casual games have already been made for you people go play those. It's like your complaining that baseball is too hard and instead of going to play softball you demand that baseball become decadent and retrogress into a retarded simplified version of what it is so that the distance between you and the best players is smaller and at the same time you are also reducing the fun that those players are having. That is the only kind of injustice (philosophically, meaning realistically). Twilight of The Idols, section "Christian and Anarchist."
