Relentless Software, the studio behind the Buzz! franchise, is working on a new project exclusively for the PlayStation Network. Blue Toad Murder Files is a murder mystery game in the style of the classic Sherlock Holmes TV drama. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Relentless founders David Amor and Andrew Eades praised the studio’s relationship with Sony.
“It’s a very exciting time to be working directly with one of the biggest platform holders ever,” said Eades. “PlayStation is a massive brand and they’re still innovating on it. There are new controllers coming out… That is a good place for any developer to be – to be working directly with such a strong gaming brand.”
Amor explains that the studio will take what it learned from Buzz – a game based on a quiz show people have seen on TV many times, and use classic murder mystery storytelling techniques to guide players through Blue Toad.
The release of Blue Toad Murder Files marks the studio’s first self-published game. Eades explained that Relentless is an exclusive developer and also exclusive to the PlayStation Network. He said that the PSN allows the studio to deliver its own game.
When asked about developing games for platforms outside the Sony brand, like the iPhone for example, both men agreed that the iPhone is an interesting gadget, but the App Store doesn’t provide the same quality as the PSN.
“There’s something of a velvet rope around PlayStation Network that I think keeps the quality level high,” Amor said.
