Many fans were wondering what the next 'big thing' from Rock Band developer Harmonix Music Systems would be, and today we can finally confirm that the studio has been slaving away on the Rock Band Network.

Rock Band Network, or RBN, is a comprehensive toolset that allows the creation and distribution of original Rock Band songs, vocals included. Song prices can be set anywhere between $0.50 and $3.00 USD, with a 30% cut of each sale going to the creator.

When prompted for comment, Harmonix COO Mike Dornbrook told PSU, "...we’ve been dreaming of this since Frequency. I’m thrilled that it has finally come to pass. I think it’s the most important step Harmonix has made to date, and look forward to the day when bands break through [using] Rock Band."

Rock Band Network is currently in closed beta, but Harmonix hopes to open up the beta to the public in August, in time for an official release sometime this year.

Maybe Breadpig will finally get its "music" in Rock Band, after all.

The thing that makes it great is that it wont be just ANYONE making music, it'll be pwoplw who actually KNOW what they're doing and they wont be making music out of horrible 8bit midi samples. This will mean the songs are potentially quality offerings rather than a bunch of remade zelda and mario bros themes.

This is great and all but it will actually be a while before this makes it to the PS3.

RBN was developed using XNA and is thus for the XBox 360. They plan to 'eventually' launch this for the PS3 and possibly the Wii but there is not even a rough date for those plans.

I can't wait for this to come out, and am super stoked for it but it sucks that I am going to have to wait.

Finally, people like myself who actually play music can finally play our REAL instruments on this music program (hopefully) and expose our music.  Bada55.

can't wait for this to come to the PSN. Right now even the wiki for the application shows that it is tied to the xna creator's club.

Sony doesn't presently provide a way to do this, so it may be a long while or we'll just be stuck with the favorites from the 360 crowd.

I would rather the cration tools stay on the 360, and let the best songs get sold on the PSN.

the only way GH can top this is if they come up with a code that makes the tracks for any game you have on your HDD.
