GamesCom: SCEE would price PS3 at 199 if it were 'sensible'

Sony Europe head honcho Andrew House has said that the platform holder would ‘absolutely’ slap a £199 GBP price tag on the PlayStation 3 in the UK – that is, providing the decision rested within the boundaries of ‘sensible business.’
Speaking to the chaps at VG247 during GamesCom this week, House commented: “If we could get to a more aggressive price point within the boundaries of sensible business, absolutely would we wish to do that? Yes, we would.”
“We have to deal with an exchange regiment that is-what-it-is right now, and not something that we are obviously in control of. I also think, as well, that that we have - let’s not forget - a great line-up of content coming for PS3 this year that I think will be very motivating and I think what we are also trying to do - we spent a lot of time yesterday very deliberately talking about the network - talking about what we are doing to improve, refresh, and add more capabilities to the network.”
Elsewhere, House declared that the company feels it is in pretty good shape for the forthcoming winter holiday season, pointing to expanding services of PlayStation Network, such the movies on demand feature, which is due in Europe this November.
“I think, will put us in reasonably good shape for this holiday,” he said.

Here we go again, exchange blah blah blah..
Sony, you have revenue from almost every single business aspect in the world. Surely giving us the same excahnge price as the yanks won't bankrupt you! You'd also sell TONS of consoles too..
Pricier = people kinda buying it
£199 = everyone buying one, which = more $ for Sony.. Silly executives.

$199 is the true "sweet spot" for the casual gamer, though $299 is a steal!

who cares, €299 is a brilliant price for what your getting. All Sony have to do now is get some really good and widespread advertising going.

£199 would be an awesome price, but at the same time, £249 is a great price. £299 was also a good price for what you got. And I still to this day think that I got a bargain for my launch 60GB at £425.
Anyway, I'm off to pre-order my PS3 Slim.

I bought my 60gb PS3 for £425 (£382 with student discount) close to launch. Then paid an additional £30 for a dual shock pad, £40 for an HDMI cable (i know I was robbed), and have just paid £60 for a 500gb HDD( oh yeah). £555 in all, plus the £1000 for the HD TV. Do I complain, no. Cos I've had so much excellent gaming out of the PS3.
£250 is an excellent price and I am now considering buying a 2nd machine to use as a Blu-ray player alone.

@12 - In theory, yes they can. But it still costs them a certain amount to buy the units from Sony. They can lower the price to whatever they want, so any reduction basically comes out of the retailer's pocket.
So for example, it might cost a retailer £175 to buy the PS3 from Sony, then they sell it at the RRP of £249, getting £74 profit. They could sell it to us at £199, but then they only get £50 profit.
It all depends how small a margin a retailer is willing to make. You may well find the new Slim available from some online retailers for £229 some time after launch.
Apparently, GAME are considering doing an 'upgrade' offer, where you take in your current PS3 and pay a small amount to exchange it for a new Slim model - so you may be able to get one cheaper anyway.

it dosent matter if Sony dropped the price in Europe ... because we will always pay much "much" more than the gamers in North America & Japan.
Not because European territory is a rich region means that they have the right to suck us DRY.
now the price in NA is 299$ & 299€ in Europe ... still 26$ higher than the PREVIOUS price in NA(399$) & 126$ higher than the current price.
So ... Dear Sony .... S.T.F.U .... talk about reasonable prices when you offer your products the same price for everyone ... everywhere

Sony need to think about it logically...if they dropped it to £199 it would sell sooooooooooooooo much, meaning all those millions more people would be BUYING games and accessories...meaning more money for Sony, and happy devs meaning more support and more great games.
