Sony to market PS3 as a 'total entertainment solution'

Sony has revealed that the platform holder intends to reposition the PlayStation 3 as an all-in-one entertainment device via a brand new marketing onslaught ahead of the launch of PS3 Slim.
“We have been a game company for years and we would never walk away from that, but research confirmed there is a larger proposition under our nose," SCEA’s Peter Dille told the LA Times. “We wanted to reposition as a total entertainment solution. We felt like we can really own entertainment."
While the console maker will still target the PS3 at hardcore gamers with the likes of future releases such as Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, the new ad push aims to attract "moms and families" too.
Having already launched in North America, one advertisement describes the system as "the greatest gaming, Blu-ray playing, move downloading system around,” while a second ad focuses on a teenager complaining about his grandmother utilizing his PS3 for watching movies.
PS3 Slim will retail for $299 USD and goes on sale during the first week of September.

Sony mishandle and for lack of a better word screw up the PS3 launch. The lack of software and the unkeep promises made.

Well, they will at least have to update the music player to allow equalization, not to mention ...are the connections adequate to replace peoples hi-fi systems? I doubt it considering many of us cannot connect our 5.1 surrounds simply because the cnnections, adapters or lead do not exist for it.
So as a music center...it will fail.
As for the rest....well, fair enough. But spread too thin & you lose many.....especially if you allow one end to slip to the wayside. Just never forget where you started from....games.;)
@people claiming SONY were already doing this...they were not.
It was stated in passing...but it was never fully marketed to families. It was always orientated towards gamers & mentioning all of its capabilities as a bonus.

@12 you can hook your ps3 up to 5.1 through the optical port . no offense, but if your surround sound receiver doesn't have at least one optical in ,then your receiver is outdated.

In todays market, Sony MUST advertise the obvious. The PS3 has so many great pieces of tech under the hood that it defies a simple marketing strategy. Free online, Blue-Ray, Blue tooth support, expandable hard drives, recharging controllers, built in WiFi, USB support for mice and keyboards, Web browsing, Home etc etc. Please Sony, market the h*ll out of it, somehow. Get the message out! ( I do my part )

@ 12, I have over 250 albums on my PS3 complete with cover art and track lists and use it as my main music system. I think it is incredible and one of PS3's best features which is very under publicised. I just have an HDMI lead to my TV and then phono outs to from my TV to my Hi Fi amp and speakers. The sound quality is superb, the limiting factor being the quality of the MP3 files rather than the PS3 or cables. My parents, who are nearly 60 and have no interest in games, are now thinking of buying a PS3 purely to use as a music player and web browser!

"the new ad push aims to attract "moms and families" too. "
Hmmm as long as they don't take it too far.
I want to see non stop game releases throughout the year as has been happening since 08-2010
If they drop some of that or cut into it for "moms" or "families" I wont be happy.. an neither will sony.
Now if they keep it in check them I'm ok with letting inferior moms and families get their attention at times.
(lets see how many ppl get pissed at that last comment... hehehe thats my goal)
