UPDATE: The firmware update is now live for those living in North America. You can expect other regions to follow shortly.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE: A posting on the PlayStation Blog teases the new PlayStation 3 Firmware 3.00. The firmware will be “available shortly,” and promises some huge additions. When we say available shortly, it could be within a few hours as the original announcement said the firmware would be released on September 1.
After you download the update, you are going to get an assortment of new features like animated XMB themes, the ‘What’s New’ section, a redesigned status indicator and Friends List, and support for new avatars.
As of writing, we checked to see if the update was available, but it’s not live, yet. It looks like we may have to wait until the morning to download the new firmware.

Not like them to make a post on the blog when they already announced release date....the 'looking forward to your feedback' comment at the end of the PSB post gives me hope there's gonna be some nice unannounced stuff lol :D
